Friday afternoon, men's update: Cal men V8 boat looked quite good in winning their semifinal. They are through to the final to race Washington, Northeastern, Dartmouth, Syracuse, and Stanford for the national championship.
Okay, Cal's national championships hopes (both for the team and every individual boat) are still alive after Friday. ALL BOATS have advanced to either the finals (for the men) or semifinals (for the women) except for the cancelled Men's V4 race on Friday afternoon.
From watching the race, it was clear that teams who were ahead in the semifinal were not going all out to set their best time. Cal's semifinal was by far the most competitive between not just the 2nd (Stanford) and 3rd (Brown) places but also between. 2nd and 1st place. This was why Cal posted the fastest semifinal time.
California (Breuer, F.) 06:19.449
Stanford (Traeger, F.) 06:21.206
Washington (Esau, G.) 06:20.825
Northeastern (Berend, J.) 06:24.845
Dartmouth (Gralla, P.) 06:29.315
Syracuse (Buard, A.) 06:33.000
Cal is the most likely challenger to Washington for the national title, but I think the likelihood of Washington winning is 66%, Cal has a 20% chance, and the rest of the field 14%.
Updated with the Friday morning results - which was not so great. Men's V8 (the only men's race that matters) was only 4th best overall (but they also probably were not going all out). Cal Women have two boats that will need to race in the repechage to possibly advance.
