This team, while not talented in the Pac-12, has more talent than to be losing games to EWU. We just continually make head puzzling decisions - throwing bounce passes below the knee to Lars on a fast break. we had at least 4 to 5 charges, throwing it to covered players, Kuany taking a contested corner 3 with 13 seconds left, every screen is slipped . These guys are seniors. This should not be happening.
For the life of me I can’t figure out why Fox doesn’t go up tempo more…it works in the very limited times he has tried it, and this roster is crying out for it…just a colossal coaching fail.
For THIS SPECIFIC GAME not playing fast made sense. Our guards who could handle the ball were Joel Brown . . . and recent addition to the team Wrenn Robinson. But everything could be traced back to him - a lack of depth is also recruiting's fault, and who is responsible for that?
Wow. What a moment to reflect on the current situation. Others will disagree, but I feel bad for Mark Fox. I think there was blip of optimism with word of a deep roster and a couple of solid recent recruits, but that depth (e.g., at point guard) has never materialized due to injury and now illness.
This all points back to his first recruiting class. They needed bodies and got bodies but no real gems. We have had some luck getting guards out of the portal, but no Clayton has hurt big time. Andre transferring is really starting to hurt now.
It seems as if a coach has a narrow window to make a splash. Cuonzo came in hard getting Rabb and Brown. Gotta make a splash fast or else. Honestly worried that we'll be in a cycle of this if we are in another situation where everybody bails; it's just hard to rebuild from that. You need a really good coach and a really talented recruiting staff.
Respectfully, we need to stop using DeJuan Clayton as a f-ing crutch. DeJuan Clayton is a 7th year SR that has been an inefficient, low %-shooting, ball-dominant combo guard at the mid-major level...he was not an impact player at Coppin St. or Hartford, and he sure wasn't going to be at Cal. We have pretty much the same player in Devin Askew, and unfortunately there is only one basketball...Clayton is not, and has never been, the missing piece for this team.
Mark Fox is the problem, NOT the absence of a player that figured to be nothing more than a rotation piece at the Power 5 level. He is simply an excuse.
Sorry Stanfurdstinks, don't mean to single this out, but I keep reading and hearing from broadcasters how Cal misses DeJuan Clayton, and it's just BS. A competent Head Coach beats these UCD, UCSD, Texas St, Southern, Eastern Washington teams even without some players...
Totally! Firing Fox is obvious, but he will need to be replaced and unless we fire Knowlton we have no reason to expect his replacement to be or do any better.
I predict Cal will go 1-29 this year with the one win coming against Stanford. Because of this Knowlton will once again extend Fox giving him a lifetime contract. Who cares about winning any games if they aren't against Stanford. As long as Knowlton is AD nothing will go right for men's basketball or football, hopefully that idiot gets fired and has a miserable life.
Again, this team went on an international tour, which means they had a full month more than virtually every other team in the nation to practice. That's a major advantage. What's this program is doing is virtually unprecedented.
Yup. This team should have been ahead of the curve early…which puts the onus squarely on Fox. Instead, they lose to UC Davis and UCSD….
This is the only loss I give him the pass on because as with Jordan Shepherd last year, Devin Askew is the extent of Mark Fox’s O. That is it, so without him, this team had no chance. You’d like to think that Cal could beat a 3-5 Big Sky team at home with 8 other scholarship players, but not when you’re dealing with this unimaginative boob.
This program is a dumpster fire…I’ve seen Randle and Lamond…Where TF is Lamps, Ryan Anderson, Marks, Rod Benson, Kidd, Big Lee, Ubaka, RFK, Diggs, etc. DOES ANYONE GIVE A SCHITT???
I am not giving him a pass. In no world should Cal lose to Eastern Washington at home, regardless of roster challenges. To me, this is the worst loss of the season.
This one is minorly personal for me as well. I used to live in the EWU footprint in central WA. Cheney is truly an agricultural town first, college town about 6th. EWU is perfectly fine middle-of-the-road Big Sky school (my son had a full ride offer from there, wisely chose Cal). But Cheney is a throwback town, feels like the mid 70's when you drive through it. In no way should that school be beating Cal at anything.
Shantay used to coach at EWU...I liked their offense. They moved the ball well, inside and out (unlike Cal) and got good shots...a better team hits them.
Shantay is seriously a likely candidate to replace Mark Fox, unless they have a solid season and he prices himself out of range.
Mark Fox is just incapable. That's fine. It's not his fault he can't win. He just sucks.
So I have no ill feeling towards Fox, but I absolutely cannot stand Knowlton for keeping a guy who cannot win.

Ms. Christ, are you watching? You need a new AD asap.
She's not watching...she's sitting on her wraparound porch, drinking Kool Aid.

Mark Fox is that you. No need to hide behind a username

My point here was more how much we have depended on the transfer guard, which makes us vulnerable.
Yeah...and now, probably a whole lotta $$$$.
All these issues even beyond Knowlton goes all the way to the top with Christ who also has a track record of ambivalence towards sports
I agree Knowlton has no clue and has to go. He might be a good military guy but wow, he has no clue on running a quality athletic program.
Sandy Barbour was so much better.
Totally! Firing Fox is obvious, but he will need to be replaced and unless we fire Knowlton we have no reason to expect his replacement to be or do any better.
I’d say we can’t be worse…but I said that with Wyking and Fox….

Well, I can’t argue with that.

And Shantay was smart and got out of Cheney :-)
It figures that a Covid issue would still prove significant in yet another loss that could have been a win for a Bay Area team.
0-10? Blame Covid.
My hope is that one day I’ll see a gift email stating that Fox has been fired (and then Knowlton, so we don’t let the same man make the same mistake).
Christmas is just around the corner, just saying.
