Florida State is arguably the best 0 - 3 team in the country. They still maintain loads of talent and have yet to put together a complete game. They are wounded and hurt and that is a dangerous combination for a team that has under performed. This will be the toughest game of the season to date for the Bears.

I should sure hope so - the only other 0-3 teams are Temple, Kent State, UMass, Troy and Old Dominion

FSU's defense can't stop the run. If we do to them what we did in the second half to SDSU we should score plenty of points while burning up clock.

DJ and his offense have not yet encountered a defense like CAL's. DJ is not the most mobile QB and he's terrible at reads. I expect us to limit their run attack and for our takers to pick off several passes.

I think this is CAL's coming out party. If we put it all together and beat FSU with a solid performance, we will be ranked next Sunday and the Miami game may be a Game Day broadcast.

Nice. It would be great if Ott could play but I suppose his availability is unknown. Based on his sideline appearance on Saturday night it would seem unlikely. Nevertheless the Jet and Callaway seem like capable backups who could break 100 yards against FSU maybe each. Need to block better though. The well traveled FSU QB was not impressive in the Memphis game and has real trouble throwing down field outside of short dinks and dunks from what I've seen

Jaydn was in his uni pants on the sideline; seems more “ready if needed”? Maybe? Either way, OL needs to open holes and we need to pressure DJ

I saw him in full uniform before the game started, then he came back wearing a jacket. I also suspect it was a "play in an emergency" type situation.

Last year DJU was 19 for 25 with 5 TDs in Strawberry Canyon. Yikes that 4th Q was rough...

Ideally we beat FSU and get ranked 24th or 25th, then drop out on the bye week as voters forget about us. Gives the team more motivation to make a statement against Miami.

I was worried that they would try a backup against us, but Norvell just said DJU is practicing well rofl.

The Bears need to go into the game with an underdog mentality and scratch and claw like a Bear for everything. Do not expect anything to be given and Take everything.

Expand full comment

While I like the underdog role for this game, the folks (bettors?) who set the odds appear to be basing their decision on the “name” and past history of FSU and not “on field” performance. I hope FSU reads the line and figures Cal is a pushover from California! If we can smack them in the mouth right away, they may fold.

It's basically a tie game. Handicappers usually give 2.5 to 3.5 points to the home team to help account for home field advantage.

I agree with other posters, FSU is a good team. Albeit DJU is a terrible QB that only teams like Cal make look good. I agree that the odds favor FSU, home field alone is +3 points and distance from home is another +3 points. That said, FSU is due ~ at some point ~ to have a game more in-line w/ their talent. I don't want it to be against Cal.

That said, in year 8:

Wilcox teams still have a MO of starting slow,

don't take advantage of opportunities,

have a marginal P4 OL,

are creating penalties all over the field,

have no killer instinct what so ever,

which all lands on Wilcox.

He needs to stop instilling that "football games are hard to win" and instead instill, "we are going to kick some fucking ass". Mentality matters in sport, like it or not. Be positive, be assertive, be confident and stop saying a win or loss is a play or 2. Hell our losses have been WAY, WAY more than a play or 2. He's kidding himself with that horseshit. Go out and be dominant.

"Cal completed its non-conference play last Saturday with a 31-10 home win against San Diego State."

Nope, we still play Oregon State. 4 non-conference games this season.

Oops. I have a mind block and still think of them as our conference brothers. Thanks for the correction!

Expand full comment

Isn't it 4 going forward? ACC is like SEC and has 8 conference game schedules because they need the extra week for OOC rivalries.

Expand full comment

Correct. We can expect a non-conference game to fall in the middle of the season going forward, rather than having them all front-loaded like before.

Ugh, I hate seeing so many articles about the death of FSU football. I still remember us heading down to UCLA in 2011--Rick Neuheisel was a dead man walking, they'd just lost to Arizona 48-12, and six UCLA players had been suspended for fighting.

...UCLA won 31-14.

My fear is DJU doesn't start and whoever does ends up being lights out. They've got a 4-5 star freshman on the bench who is athletic.

Even if DJU starts I am worried. DJU lit up our defense last season and probably had one of his best games of his career against us at Memorial.

Tbf, everyone does, against Cal. At least in the previous years.

Yup that too. I was worried seeing the Cal scripts would give him confidence..

Not only is FSU the only winless team in the ACC, but I believe they’re the only winless Power 4 team as well.

I hope we have Vatikani #71, McDonald #66, and Miller #77 back on the O line for this game. Also, I Think Ott will be ready although Thomas #25, and Calloway #2 are more than capable. These additions to the active roster makes our Offense scary to opponents.
