Wilcox spoke about the transfer portal as a way to build the recruiting class. There is a lot of uncommitted talent in the portal. I'm also guessing that some wheeling and dealing could happen, such as if you can attract a guy like Kedon Slovis then you could probably attract some talented receivers, etc. Will be curious to see who Wilcox ends up bringing into the Golden Bear fold when all is said and done.
My overall impressions is that we are doing pretty well, national rankings be damned. As Wilcox said in the presser it's a whole new landscape with the transfer portal, so we can pick up a few key pieces here and there.
The last two years have been supremely disappointing. Especially the inconsistent and relatively stagnant (year to year points) offense. But I can’t blame Wilcox. Call’s program is too fragile to just shake off something like Covid.
I also respect Wilcox a lot, and I think he can pull us up. As much as I like Garbers, I’m ready for a new QB, and maybe a super heavy multi TE set that wears down defenses.
This class looks good so far. Players certainly matter most in the end.
We’re Cal fans, so we’re resilient as hell! Let’s get it team!
What does that tell you? He bombed as DC at Bama and went into the pro ranks as a position coach and now he's back in the college game as a position coach? Hmmm...it's not even a lateral move.
Despite what the press says, Urban Meyer was NOT the problem. Brandon Staley was offered the job before Urban Meyer. It came with a BIG guaranteed salary, a first round draft pick and something like $85m in cap space. He turned it down when the owner said he would remain in charge of player personnel. Staley took the job as the HC of the Chargers instead. Urban took the job for the paycheck. My guess is he will win a lawsuit for a payout on his termination. The Jags have some deep rooted problems that start and end with the owner.
Spot on. There is so much more to be done with this class via the portal. The reality is that this class will be near the bottom third in conference and in the 50's nation wide. Not optimal in year 5 of a program. A W/L record, early in the season, that doesn't display upward trajectory, in this era of early signing, is detrimental for recruiting. As we witnessed this year w/ multiple decommits. Fortunately Ott reconsidered based on his belief in the staff and the education Cal will provide him. For next year, it is imperative that Cal gets off to a fast start and maintains consistency throughout the season. Cal cannot afford many low ranked classes for Wilcox to achieve his goals. No one knows that better than Wilcox.
The portal can provide a quick fix but can also be a crap shoot, one never knows how that will play out. The next few weeks will be interesting to see how and where Cal fills in areas of need.
For me the intriguing part of this class is the OL, especially if J. Brown decides on Cal. These OL appear to be athletic and better prepared for college ball. Albeit projecting high school kids to college assimilation is tough especially at OL.
If we can somehow get some forward momentum next year and finish with a winning record, I think we'll could see a top-20 class next year. Again, I think Wilcox's gesture of loyalty will endear him to HS coaches and parents who prioritize continuity and character.
Sam Ross from Miramonte committed....PWO?
Jack Plummer joins Cal. He's from Purdue.
No, he is not Jake Plummer's son.
Here's some film on him: https://youtu.be/KuyQfH1xFpc
UCF QB Dillon Gabriel grad transfers to UCLA...the Jonathan Martyn era likely to begin in 2023 at the earliest.
Will Ethan Garbers enter the portal?
What does "Ann Source" have to say about J. Brown? Asking for a friend.

And don’t forget a serviceable backup QB
Wonder if there's any chance Morrow might pull a Wes Howell/Tony Gonzalez and get some time on Pete Newell Court.
Probably not if he puts on weight for OL.
Tosh may be going to Oregon.
What does that tell you? He bombed as DC at Bama and went into the pro ranks as a position coach and now he's back in the college game as a position coach? Hmmm...it's not even a lateral move.
A chance to curse him out from the stands when Oregon comes to town lol
Urban Meyer fired....

We may be seeing an old friend soon.
his skill set might be a bit more in demand now that everything's above the table. no more Starbucks cups!
Oracle, gif me a "Lupoi on large rubber ducky boat gif."
Good class so far. How they fill it out via the transfer portal will determine how impactful this class is on the upcoming future.

Yep...gotta think Wilcox's show of loyalty will pay dividends long term.
But...Urban's now available!! /s
Well said and I agree Taco.

You should cc Musgrave on this memo
And McClure
Christopher Brooks transfers to Purdue (per Rob's twitter)
Rooting for him...his game definitely plays in West Lafayette, and could make some serious noise for the Boilermakers...
