Speed, versatility, and electricity
Cal has been in the market for some versatile receivers and boy do they have one now. It was a surprise when Utah WR/KR Mikey Matthews initially entered the transfer portal and it’s become treasure for the California Golden Bears, who earned his pledge this afternoon.
In an interview with Greg Biggins of 24/7 Sports, Matthews noted that, “You can’t do better than Cal. It’s one of the premier academic programs in the country and life after football is huge for me”
As a true freshman for the Utes, Matthews participated in 12 games and racked up 29 receptions for 261 yards in all sorts of positions. He additionally earned 309 yards on kick returns, including 103 kick return yards in the Coliseum vs USC. Kyle Whittingham also had Matthews at punt returner, so he will bring a shot in the arm to the Golden Bears return game. The former Mission Viejo star and teammate of Mavin Anderson will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Welcome to Cal, Mikey!
