Cal Football Elevates Michael Saffell to TE Coach
Long time Golden Bear continues to climb up the ranks
Mike introduced himself to the Cal fandom as a stalwart started on the OL in his Sophomore year. Junior year he was named to PFF’s Second Team All-Pac 12 , and a honorable mention by the coaches for All-Pac 12; this is on top of his off the field accolades such as All-Pac 12 Scholar-Athlete of the year as a senior.
He started 28 games for Cal before medically retiring in 2021.
"Mike Saffell has been a tremendous asset to Cal football ever since he arrived as a player in 2017," Wilcox said. "Mike knows this program better than anyone and is universally respected. He has proven over the last seven years that he is absolutely dedicated to doing everything he can to help us win, and it will be exciting to see what he will accomplish in his new role."

"I am grateful to coach Wilcox and the other coaches on this staff for showing their confidence in me," Saffell said. "Cal is a special place that has given so much to me, and I'm excited to be taking on this new role."
After his medical retirement during his senior year he continued his education at Haas while also working with the team as a graduate assistant with the OL under both Coach McClure and Coach Bloesch.
He is also well known for his on-camera charisma:
It is great to see guys working hard after a tough injury and a career pivot and getting recognized for this.
Go Bears!
Congrats to the young man!
He's still young but has charisma and intelligence. TE and OL are related so a promotion isn't a surprise. Hope he does great!
