Cal Football Elevates Terrence Brown and Vic So'oto to Co-DC
They retain their position groups. We also add Keith Heyward as co-DB coach and Bob Gregory as senior defensive assistant. Andrew Browning elevated to Run Game Coordinator.
BERKELEY – Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox announced Thursday that Terrence Brown and Vic So'oto have been named Co-Defensive Coordinators of the California football program.
While announcing the promotions of Brown and So'oto, Wilcox also announced the additions of experienced defensive minds Keith Heyward and Bob Gregory as a defensive backs coach and senior defensive assistant, respectively.
Lastly, defensive line coach Andrew Browning will add run game coordinator to his responsibilities this upcoming season.
This announcement finalizes the look of the Cal coaching staff from the position coach perspective. This likely means that HC Wilcox will have a bigger say on the shape and look of the defense, even calling it since neither DC Brown nor DC So’oto have called one before. The addition of DB Coach Heyward gives them another resource to tap into, he returns to Cal after leading the 2022 UNLV defense, spending 2023 with the LV Raiders, and being the DC of Oregon State in 2024.
Furthermore, Cal adds a familiar voice in the room in Bob Gregory whose Odyssey-esque trip around the West Coast of college football had him coaching LBs at Boise State, Washington, a year as an analyst at Oregon in 2022, and Special Teams coordination at Stanford under HC Taylor.
The final move was to grant DL Coach Browning the title of Run Game Coordinator for the defense. Looks like it’ll be a crowded game planning room where Wilcox will have Brown, So’oto, Browning, Heyward, and Gregory in the room with varying levels of experience and responsibilites.
Bob Gregory is an experienced coach who knows what CAL IS ALL ABOUT and was on the staff of Tedford’s best teams. Excellent move.
