Somehow it's been ... 20 years ... since I used to read the DBD on the old CGB site. And my season ticket days are also long in the past. Nowadays, I check headlines on ESPN a couple times a week, and that's about it ... but the "Cal Hires Tosh Lupoi" was such an instant nostalgic hit that I found this site, overcome with memories about Jokes About A Boat. Ha! Wishing the best of luck to the new coach; Go Bears! Now- off to lurk on the DBD; there are some familiar usernames from way back when. Need to catch up on years' worth of inanity.
For so long we have wanted the AD to give football the necessary attention for consistent success, which means applying business principles. I think Lyons and RR have raised Cal football up to the level needed to achieve this. I trust RR's business decision to go with Tosh and feel better about hiring a newbie HC with RR as mentor.
I’m particularly impressed with the coordination here.
The way this unfolded tells me that the Tosh hire might have been in the works for quite a while by RR and RL. The speed of execution, the well placed leaks, holding the recruiting class together, Rolo and JKS staying.
These things just don’t happen without careful thought and coordination. And a lot of energy behind the scenes.
As much as I have been skeptical of this hire, the hiring process completely validates what we had already known: that we have very competent people in charge of the football program.
I am so excited for the future because the future is in the hands of wise people who care.
Agreed - it was a PR masterclass. There was a plan, and it was executed on.
From rumors leaking before signing day, to former players all almost simultaneously tweeting out support for Tosh, etc... Long gone are the days of whatever the hell Knowlton was doing, this is what actual leadership looks like.
Completely agree, and in particular how the media element was handled. Lots of early stories, an upswell of early support from opinion leaders and donors, and perhaps most important of all, the coverage it got here on WFC and the Calgorithm. Very professional and coordinated...love it!
Thankfully the "Old Blue no nothings" who have held the program back for generations, were not allowed to play the "Tosh did us dirty" card that so many loser Cal fans have also played, and veto this hire.
It's amazing how many chances Cal has had to get Football right, even after screwing it so hard so many times. It's gotten so bad that I - who used to believe Cal was a sleeping giant - am a little reticent to even believe Tosh Lupoi can make Cal a playoff-contending program. But if anyone can, Tosh can, so hope springs eternal.
I probably would have put this a little more tactfully, but there is a segment of our fanbase that definitely has an ingrained defeatist, bad luck bears sort of mentality. We finally have a chancellor that expects excellence from the football program, and I hope this leads to a change in mentality from those who would have poo-poo'd the Tosh hire. It's time to expect more. The competence with which this process was handled by Ron and his team should give hope to everyone. I hope the anti-Toshers get on board!
"Old Blue no nothings" and "loser Cal fans." What interesting sentiments to express at a time when the Golden Bear community should be pulling together as one to celebrate and support the beginning of a new era.
This board is showing more signs of turning into the Bear Insider.
It seems Lupoi is a guy who wants to stay here - IIRC he left because he wanted higher pay with greater responsibility or one of those. If he's really successful this is one of the few hires who I don't think will be looking elsewhere. "Top candidates" seem to want Cal to be their ladder to a location or program that's already top tier. I think Lupoi wants to make Cal the location and program. Go Bears!
The people we have in place now it's just insane how far we've come. I've felt like many of you for so long that Cal football has been a sleeping giant, with such huge potential and all the ingredients to be great but without the institutional will to truly pursue it. Which has made it so frustrating to see that potential go unrealized and have to take a back seat as we've seen other programs all around us rise up and have their day in the sun and achieve sustained success but never us. Why not us?! As Lupoi said in the most on point words of the entire press release...."It's time!" Damn right it's time.
Man am I excited for this hire! I haven’t had this much hope and optimism for the football program in a long time. A new era has arrived and I’m all in. Fiat Lux! And Go Bears!

Couldn’t get into the press conference video. Maybe they’re overloaded.

Oregon’s Dan Lanning “planned for the elevation, and the Ducks didn't lose a single recruit because of it”.
Guys, just be happy we're not Penn State. No coach, no players, no recruits, no plan. How fucking terrifying.
they hired Campbell. Blue bloods find a way.
The ride ain’t over. Next is the coordinator, coaching, and staff swirl.
I'm just saying, we're off the main part of the coaching carousel of nightmares.

any rumors on OC or DC?
I hope he succeeds and I hope he stays out of trouble, but I for one an not excited about this pick.
As a man that use to pancake DL’s at CMS, I have the utmost respect for you and your commentary.
I have a good feeling about this hire. I do have to say one thing: Tosh will never get Mack Browned.
I’m glad you’re back/didn’t leave.
I think the Penn State fiasco has us all a lot more thankful for how the cookie crumbled for us.
Go Bears!
Exciting times, let the Era of Tosh begin. Long live Tosh and GO BEARS!
I wonder who he will keep as assistant coaches?

You put that far more graciously than I could have-thank you

Well, people, it’s time to get excited for Cal football.
