I know we must have football succeed to survive conference realignment at the end of the decade but I would really love to see both basketball programs get more love from more of the big donors. Go all Bears!!
The fundraising for football in particular has been extraordinary. To put even more meat on these bones, it’s worth noting that two years ago Cal Football was raising $2 million for annual operating expenses through its Caliber fund (excluding what was being done through the California Legends Collective). Now a mere two years later we have $25 million raised or committed this year already with potentially an even larger gift on the horizon. This investment (together with the investment from the Chancellor and Calimony -thanks UCLA!) is what allowed Cal to have the number two portal class in the ACC and a top 15 class nationally, as well as increasing the size of the football staff by almost 50%. The result of which investment will hopefully be seen on the field this fall.
Having study this pretty closely I think it’s fair to say that no program has come further faster in fundraising than Cal. Huge kudos to our development group and Ron Rivera in making this happen.
It is also gratifying because it aligns with what a number of us have been saying since the dawn of the NIL era and the disintegration of the Pac 12; Cal’s superpower is its large and highly affluent alumni base. If we can harness that and marry it to our academic excellence and geographic and cultural advantages there should be no stopping us.
Brilliant! I believe that if we can translate this fabulous commitment by the alumni base into success on the field this year, we can blow through Ron's three year goal. The capacity is there, now we need solidify the linkage with results to maintain the interest. IYKYK
