Right now I am gonna say we got an ace up our sleeve for QB. There's no way we've brought in 2 4* RB's, two goo TE's and an experienced WR with a college 4* rating without a great QB to attract them along with Spav. Sturdivant will be pissed off for the day he entered the portal.

Rashada to Cal?

Expand full comment

I wish.

Let’s make it happen.

WFC NIL pool?

Expand full comment

He's already signed with Miami I believe.

Expand full comment

He committed to Miami, but switched to Florida in the fall. He is currently a no show for the spring semester at Florida, which is fueling speculation that he may be switching again.

Rashada signed with Florida, but Gator Twitter is in meltdown mode because classes started and he is still not enrolled. Apparently it is NIL related and he is holding out last minute...

Stay tuned.

Is there word on WHAT he signed? NLI would bind him to the school but just financial aid papers would not... I don't actually think he's coming to CAL, but since we're speculating...

Expand full comment

Personally I think there’s zero chance he’s coming to Cal, tho that doesn’t mean the Bears won’t get someone legit…just not Rashada.

Not sure if he inked a Financial Aid agreement, tho would assume. I believe in the NIL and transfer portal era, the NLI lines have been blurred and that is no longer as big a deal…certainly wouldn’t prevent him from going elsewhere…I’d guess he’s SEC bound, just maybe not Florida.

Personally, I’m hoping for Martin…and hopefully NOT Garbers.

All that information suggests he's not suited for Cal

Sam Jackson just entered from TCU. 4-star, dual threat. Interesting due to Sonny and Spav's relationship.

Expand full comment

Anyone at TCU this year knows how fast a roster can come together from the portal, so maybe SJ can believe that CAL can be next year's Frogs...?

Expand full comment

He would be an EXCELLENT get

Expand full comment

Go get him

Expand full comment

Maybe they're targeting someone who hasn't

formally entered the portal yet, hence the silence? There's plenty "you can't talk to me but my people are listening" stuff that happens.

I want to believe that coaching was our main OL issue and that a stud QB will be the final piece of our overhaul. Just 8 more days before all names are officially in the portal (spring window aside) so we should have clarity soon.

Expand full comment

Clearly it's so that we can run the wildcat formation

Expand full comment

He can come back still

Expand full comment

Maybe. Would trace him for a couple of linemen though.

Expand full comment

OK, just lay him down on a big piece of paper and get a pencil

Rashada formally requested a release from Florida….

Expand full comment

A&M offered him more money? ;-)

Expand full comment

Interesting. Florida Gator twitter is up in arms!

Expand full comment

Unsurprising. Let's see how that works out. I'm sure someone will release the details and a narrative that supports their side of the story.

I'm liking this post, and agreeing with Rugbear, but I fully understand that its not based on anything rational, instead only because optimism feels better than doom.

Expand full comment

Really, the only thing that makes sense is that there are other options elsewhere.

Expand full comment

This is getting ridiculous. I love that we are getting nice players, but I wish to root for student athletes who play 3-4 years for us. Imagine Marshawn Lynch or Cam Jordan playing on 2,3 college teams before their long NFL careers. It wouldn't be the same. Nothing in college football is the same, so I just gotta live with the new norm.

Expand full comment

Agreed-the transfer portal feels like free agency in baseball. Its partly leading to the professionalization of college football, unfortunately

Expand full comment

Yeah. Imagine transferring 3x before you got your B.A. Kind of hard to fathom

Expand full comment

Former Cal PG Charlie Moore remains the poster child for transfer portal lunacy…he originally signed with Memphis, then Cal…then Kansas, then DePaul and finally Miami. Sorry, but academics were an afterthought.

The portal has become a joke. The buffoons at the NCAA are actively working on a plan to limit the number of times players transfer by stiffening the waiver requirements for a 2nd transfer. This would affect players like Devin Askew.

Expand full comment

It is a new norm and hard to get used to. As I get older I see these young guys kind of as reflections of my own son, who is in his early 20's and a recent grad. Or at least my son's friends. Previously you could watch these young men grow up in the system from 17 or 18 year old freshmen to seniors getting flowers on senior day. No more.

Interesting.....looks like we are getting a QB1 coming soon!

Expand full comment

It's rather telling that he's wearing J-Mike's old number...

This is a nice pickup. He was an army all-American back in high school. There’s gotta be a QB coming…I hope.

I have the weirdest mix of optimism, confusion, and DOOOOOOOM. Portal deadline is Jan 18 so the market will be set soon.

Chandler Rogers commits to North Texas.

Expand full comment

Why do all roads seem to go through North Texas right now?

Sam Huard at UW just hit the portal today. There is our target. He would be a YUGE get.

Expand full comment

The UW blog story on Huard said yesterday that the good QB's that were in the portal have been "pickled clean." So it better be Huard or Chance Nolan or Cal is in major trouble. Huard played poorly in one game - the Apple Cup - and has not been a serious contender for more play time since he's been there. That's concerning. Most of the the comments on Huard in the Dawg Pound were that he did not show development while he was at UW. One person said he had it on authority that Huard was heading to Cal Poly to team up with his high school coach. A few others said he would be a better fit in Troy Taylor's offense at Stanford.

You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.

He’s been compared to a rawer version of Goff but the problem is he isn’t very mobile. Could become a problem with our OL issues

Expand full comment

At this point I would love for him to become a problem behind our OL

Nah, all he has is his name. He's been pretty much a disappointment.

Cal needs some O-linemen to be competitive.

Expand full comment

Perhaps we’re grabbing guys who realize they’re not going to the league and want a degree worth more than a half eaten bag of Doritos and a strip club atm receipt.

Don’t get too optimistic.

Remember. We have less than an o-line; no qb; and haven’t had a winning season in 3 years.

Sunshine pump all you want but until we have an o line this is all smoke and mirrors.

They’re not coming for the oline (we don’t have one), the qb (we don’t have one), the nil $ (we don’t have any), the nfl pipeline (that ship sailed a long time ago), or the exposure (we have a coach with no sm presence in a conference known for poor ratings when most people are sleeping or f%#king)

I dunno. Sunshine is great but…

I mean, we have a QB now and word is that our NIL pool is growing. NFL pipeline may not be strong, but we still have a ton of players in the NFL. Honestly, I'm not sure why you even come here? I think you'd be much happier elsewhere.
