Cal Football Names Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele as QB1
The true freshman gets the opportunity he relished for right out of the gate
For a few months now, it’s been a heated battle between Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and Devin Brown to determine who will take the reins as starting quarterback when the Bears head to Corvallis to open their season.
Pete Thamel of ESPN first reported the news that JKS was named QB1 and in a surprising twist, Cal Football also confirmed the report with a social media post of their own.
The true freshman and 5* recruit out of Hawaii joins a list of Bears who will start right from the jump under center, with Jared Goff most recently starting as a true freshman quarterback.
“He's going to go through things for the first time,” Cal HC Justin Wilcox said of JKS during a media scrum today. “He doesn't have that luxury of experience, and I'm sure he won't be perfect. We're not expecting him to be perfect. You expect him to be Jaron and get a little better every day.” (Credit to Joaquin Ruiz of the Daily Cal for getting the quote)
Many have raved about JKS and his arm and it’s clear that it won him the job. Not only did he navigate a direct battle but also worked through inevitable mistakes to earn the trust of coaches and teammates alike.

Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war. Love the aggression and the gambler ethos. Playing it safe has gotten us absolutely nowhere. Glad to try something new.
Folks:
I have reached a point in my Cal FB fandom I honestly did not think I would reach again, at least not during the Justin Wilcox era: legitimate frigging excitement.
It is a strange feeling of vulnerability, as I should probably be more like Charlie Brown, waiting for Lucy to pull the football out from under me… but despite my issues with Justin Wilcox and the questions I have as to his leadership chops, this JKS news coupled with the coaching staff/player additions leads me to honestly believe the Golden Bears will have their best season yet under JW.
Fully prepared to be completely wrong, but I think this program surprises a lot of people this year, especially the main stream sports media and their lazy a$$ Cal takes.
Go Bears…8-4 and a visit to El Paso on NYE Day. Let’s do it.
