IMHO this is the most critical task Cal faces in getting to a championship level, as games are decided by offensive and defensive line play. He sounds like a really good coach to get the line play to that level -- I hope he is given enough time to accomplish his mission.

This was a good read, I enjoyed it, thank you. I do hope Coach Anae succeeds here with obtaining consistent high level offensive line play. Friday night playing North Carolina would be a great time to reach that goal.

Yes, let's start strong against NC and take them out. Don't give them any hope, they should be demoralized given their record. GO BEARS!

Great article! Thanks for your wonderful in depth look into Cal’s football culture.

I hope that the coach is teaching these guys more in depth skills and with hunger. I don’t want to name names in the o line but there are some glaring deficiencies in their abilities to move together and communicate their assignments on sooooo many plays against defenses that blitz or crossing defensive linemen. And it’s particularly more frustrating to watch when three defensive linemen are weaving past 4 to 5 offensive line men getting sacks when they could’ve given the qb more time and space and allowing for “coverage” sacks. This has been a major problem with Wilcox’s offenses and it’s been frustrating to watch. One has to learn from the many mistakes - but talent or not there are ways to train these guys. Getting 18 year olds who are “talented” out of high school doesn’t always translate to success. We can get three star players (like alex Mack) or 4 star defensive ends (like Bynum) and coach them up. Using money is a lazy way for coaches and management as excuses- sure it helps to have them ready out of the gate, but also want a mansion and a private jet but it’s not going to land on my lap and if it happens to land on my lap Uncle Sam can easily take it away unless I find a way to maintain an income to sustain this level of luxury. They need to feel the hunger! Be hungry! F-n want it! Drive for it! There’s no time but right now!

Thanks for letting me vent. Go bears!

Again, nice article TD!

I had a lot of hope for Anae. So far he's been the biggest disappointment. I understand it takes time but I was expecting unrealistic turnaround.

Yup, the reality is that when you've been absolutely useless at recruiting at the HS level for years and don't have the money to poach high level OL talent while losing anyone that's remotely decent to the transfer portal...you get stuck trying to compete with an FCS / G5 OL.

He may be one of the best OL coaches in the country, but we would never know because he's got his work cut out for him here. I hope he builds quickly while he's here.
