He "homed in" on the prospect (like a homing pigeon). To hone is to sharpen. You could say that "Thompson further honed his skills as a recruiter by homing in on a prospect from Arkansas." ;-)

Turner is definitely a national face Cal feels like they're in a good spot with, although of course a top 7 isn't really narrowing the field.
