Great to see! I'll be there with both of my sons on Saturday night and sure hope for a good showing.

1. I will continue to bang the drum for Justin Baker, Touchdown Maker

2. Remember two years ago when the first depth chart had Ricky Walker III as the starting WR? So take these with a huge grain of salt.

Milner Terry and Sturdivant not even on here, interesting.

kinda? 3 freshman all at upperclassmen heavy positions. not surprised due to that. I wouldnt be surprised to see Terry play. Once they brought in Glover one of Kai or Zach was dropping off the depth chart. J.Mike was hurt for 2 weeks of camp but has since recovered and is available to play. thats where we are.

I feel like Milner will be on the depth chart for Sac. State or something where they can give him a few plays towards the end of the game. Similar with the rest, Nevada we need experience to come in and play on week 1 but since we can give the freshmen some field time without burning the red shirt I'm sure they'll get that when the risk is lower.

Since the 4 game rule the decision for me has always been do you throw them into OOC to see if they can contribute to you this season? Or do you hold them for depth/injuries later in the season where they can play and still not lose that redshirt.

They are freshmen in a complex system at the P5 level...

We may see Terry when Cal goes to heavy sets. And we may see Latu in the red zone.

I'm surprised Cindric beat out Driscoll. But coaches know best and see them everyday. Either way we will need serviceable backups and it appears that Cal has 10 linemen to mix and match. Not surprised that Moore is the #1 RB and I expect DeCarlos and Dancy will get a lot of touches.

Overall what is striking about this depth chart is just that, the DEPTH is by far the best in the Wilcox era. A testament to better recruiting & development.

DL looks solid and deep albeit w/o much experience. BTW what happened to Maldonado? Not even in the 3 deep, perhaps he's injured?

Collin Gamble on KR & PR, nice!!

Depth at ILB looks solid. Whereas the depth in the defensive backfield is thinner than I had thought now that I see it on paper.

Wilcox said Maldonado is out this week due to injury. Next week status is unknown.

I wonder if Brooks is a little banged up and that’s why Moore is listed ahead of him. At any rate, I believe if Brooks is healthy they will get about the same number of carries.

Ryan Glover as the backup QB seems a bit surprising, no?

Expand full comment
Rob Hwang's avatar

Kinda? I don’t think you bring in a grad transfer QB with one year left if you don’t expect him to take the backup role.

Thanks for the clarification on masking. I was going to make the trip from North LA and stop over in Monterey for a quick round of golf Saturday morning before heading to the game. But then I discovered the gouging that is going on right now for travel and hotels. $575 a night for the beat-up Hyatt in Monterey? No thanks. If I were going to the game, I would gladly follow the guidelines and mask up inside. But outside, where I can scream and yell at a game again and knowing I got the double jabs, I would not wear it in the bleachers. My guess is that you can roam around that stadium a bit for this game and keep a respectable social distance. Thankfully, it's still a choice.

$575?! Jeez. You're better off knocking on doors on Greek row and offering up $150 and a leg of beer for a room, lol

That is just hilarious. Sixty year old dude knocking on doors in Greek Row gotta raise some alarm bells. The keg of beer in tow....you never know. BTW, the price of that crappy Hyatt just went to $650 a night. Not making this up. People are obviously acting irrationally and paying up. I am in the car business, and it's the same thing. Stupid prices.

You're telling me, I got a feel of it when I bought a car earlier this year. On the bright side, my wife's car is worth the same/slightly more as when we bought it last year...

$650 for a crappy Hyatt, though.. Wow. Something's gotta give!

Any news on who the captains are?

Expand full comment
Piotr Le's avatar

We'll probably find out in a separate post by the PR. I bet its

Garbers, Nikko, Daltoso

Deng, Goode, Hicks

Longhetto.

Or we can do the "new week, new captain" thing.

Also Craig, Brooks, Bequette, Drayden are possible

Deng and Garbers are semi-confirmed - they self-identified as captains in their media day interviews

Coleman, Craig, and Mettauer will all play on Sundays

Expand full comment
Piotr Le's avatar

Hard agree. Craig's issue is health, if he can get healthy and have the consistent game time he can be a quality LT in the NFL. Mettauer is as solid as solid gets, guys like that are premium in the NFL especially now that he can run in power/zone. Coleman, I will have to see live but from all indicators has the best weight/stregth/speed combo.

COLEMAN. THE ICEBOX. FREEZING DEFENDERS SINCE 2019.

At this point in their careers, only Mettauer has earned that conversation. Craig's potential is obvious but he hasn't proven anything yet. Can't wait to see what all the hype is about on Coleman.

yeah, true. I don't know what I was watching. But I remember thinking he was getting beat multiple times. Maybe that was Daltoso.
