Some pretty nice additions and I'm sure there's still more to come. Today we really are an ACC team and are being measured against all-new* conference opponents.
Being an east coaster I get the ACC network. I looked in a couple times and they were reviewing Va Tech and Clemson signings. I didn’t have the patience to wait and see if they covered Cal.
I can’t remember a class that was this heavy on TX signings. A somewhat TX-based coaching staff we have had for a while now, even with Jake S leaving. Of course it remains to be seen whether the coaches from TX will stay long-term, though, as we know Berkeley is not for everyone. The makeup of Cal football, inasmuch as it is relying of late on somewhat of a TX pipeline, may be less and less CA based. Let’s see if it’s sustainable. I know Cal has some history of great players (Lasco, Enwere, Sturdivant) from TX, just never seen a cadre of this many recruits from there at once.
Texas is fertile ground, so much football talent. I moved to Austin in 1994 for grad school and stayed. The love and intensity for football here is off the charts. They start playing young, so it is ingrained in the culture. De La Salle's stadium is like a middle school stadium here. Middle schools and High Schools have multiple football teams. The high school stadiums are like small/medium size college stadiums. The college stadiums are like the pro's. Ideally we'd pick up some top California talent, but until then keep mining Texas. Our new OC is as Texas as them come. ;-) GO BEARS!
It's going to be the future, at least to stymie CA participation rates trending down generally.
There's so little talent in NorCal compared to the past. SoCal is one of our bases, but it's so competitive for solid 3 star and 4 star guys because we have to go against so many schools that can offer similar things to us but with better football (USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Washington, etc.).
From texasfootball.com: “The NFL released its annual breakdown of rostered players in Week 1 for the 2023 season, and to little surprise, Texas is No. 1, producing more players on NFL rosters than any other state with 187. Florida finished second with 178 rostered players, and California came in third at 173 players.”
This is a significant change from six years prior, when FL and CA were neck and neck at about 200 each, and TX had 154.
Texas is both populous and VERY into football. Even without our existing pipeline we'll probably be recruiting heavily there. I'm sure we'll be using our annual SMU game for recruiting as well.
it doesnt matter even with these decent signings wilcox creates culture of mediocrity. sad bowl game. certainly not a recipe to go to tougher ACC

*with one minor exception

I'd be surprised if they didn't refer to us as "Cal State."
The future looks good
Solid class. Nice.
Anyone know anything ab the 5 start USC transfer Malachi Nelson? Apparently we’re in his top 5

While that would be awesome, it seems like there is basically zero chance that Malachi Nelson is transferring to Cal.
I wouldn't say no chance. Better teams aren't willing to go through project development now that they can just get experienced transfers.
Not a top 5. The article says it’s just the 5 schools he’s initially talked to after entering the portal.
We are in such a strange list.
What about this WR - https://247sports.com/Player/Tobias-Merriweather-46059232/?
Rush Reimer is from Camas, WA also. Different high school though.
Apparently he's in but we're waiting for official confirmation from him or ourside

Washington Post had a great article about the overall decline of youth tackle football. It was really good.

The SMU game is probably a selling point to recruits whose families and friends can see em play every other year
Welp, we’ve tried Oregon.
