Cal football lands transfer outside linebacker Deamontae Diggs
The Youngstown State transfer bolsters a veteran Cal defensive front.
The Cal football spring transfer portal continues to pay dividends as they landed a commitment from Deamontae Diggs, transfer from Youngstown State. He is slated to join a group of outside linebackers to provide edge pressure. Diggs also received interest from West Virginia and Pitt.
Originally recruited a wide receiver, Diggs switched to defensive line and grew into a 6-6, 260 pound frame. Diggs was primarily used in pass rushing situations last year in Youngstown State, managing 4 sacks in just over 200 snaps. He also had around a half-dozen hurries. Diggs could help fill in some of the gaps that Myles Jernigan left behind after he transferred to Louisville.
Here is some of his highlight tape below. You can see his motor on full display making big plays in the open field, which is what the Cal defensive staff likely honed in on in their recruitment.
Welcome to Cal Deamontae! Go Bears!
Nice depth piece. We really needed this in our linebacking room. He's not going to start, but he can definitely sub at both outside linebacker positions or be a specialist on any kind of blitz package. We will be able to make great use of his motor and he may eventually develop into a defensive end, which is pretty comparable to an outside linebacker anyway, except for the coverage responsibilities.
