Cal bolstered up their running back depth with a major commitment. Isaiah Ifanse, who originally entered the portal as a grad transfer from Montana State to commit to San Jose State, re-entered the portal this week, and has now committed to the Golden Bears.
Ifanse is the all-time leading rusher in Montana State history with 3742 yards, and putting up 25 touchdowns (sixth all-time). During his freshman year in 2018, Ifanse burst onto the scene, rushing for 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns while also catching 14 passes for 107 yards and another score. He was named the Big Sky Freshman of the Year.
In 2021 Ifanse produced a single-season MSU record with 1,623 rushing yards, compiling eight 100-yard games in 2021 and landing him All-America hornos. Ifanse was injured for most of the 2022 season, but did return for the playoffs and had two great performances against William and Mary (10 carries, 92 yards) and Weber State (11 carries, 161 yards, 2 touchdowns) to put them into the FCS semifinals.
Cal now has five rotation running backs with Division I experience in Jaydn Ott, Byron Cardwell, Justin Williams-Thomas, Ashton Stredick and Ifanse. Ott, Cardwell and Williams-Thomas all have injury history so it’s nice for the Bears to expand their backfield so they have the necessary depth in case of the usual wear and tear of a college football season.
Welcome to Cal Isaiah! Go Bears!
Welcome Isaiah. Running back U here we come!
Wilcox & Co. have adapted to the portal environment pretty well.
How much is NIL-related I wonder 🤔
Go Bears! It remains to be seen how these injured guys are able to return, and this might mean one or more of them are doubtful for the season, but man, if we had this whole stable of RB's in one room, can you imagine what a good Oline and OC could do with them? Pulling in a fresh guy all the time who could rip off a home run? Sign me up. Many of these guys are NFL draft caliber, and we've got em!
