On a completely other subject, haven't the sports writers observed that we have beat WA the last two times we played them and we beat the Ducks last year and almost beat them the year before with back up QB? https://www.si.com/college/cal/news/pac-12-over-under

In reality we beat the Oregon 2nd string last year, just as UCLA beat a decimated Cal squad. 2020 really, truly doesn't count for anything. Crowing about beating Oregon the same year we lost to UCLA, Ore St, and Stanford. See? Meaningless. But as far as the previous couple of years, I can see why we don't get much respect. Beating UW by 1 and 2 in low scoring games the same years we get smoked by a mediocre UCLA team indicates that we can play well in spurts, but don't have the consistent staying power to match up week after week. We kinda have to beat all of the teams we're supposed to in the same year that we win a couple that we're not to start earning that respect.

This. It is all about consistency and getting it together for longer stretches and the respect comes naturally once that is achieved. If we want to be brutally honest we have had Raiders like collapses once per season and that simply can't happen to the level it has been happening.

We’ve beaten all our rivals except UCLA in the past couple of years. Several of these were on the road. We beat UNC and Ole Miss on the road. If Cal can get past TCU on the road, which I know they can do, they could really be off to the races.

tcu will be tough. fort worth in september is going to be 90+ and humid, even worse than ole miss. similar talent levels to ole miss too but much better coached. the key for cal will be that tcu is breaking in a new oc (doug meacham) while musgrave's offense won't have much tape

I think Ole Miss has a better talent pool but you are right that TCU really gets it in the coaching department with coach Patterson, he really is good at finding diamonds in the rough with UT, OU running the show and OSU and Baylor being thorns in their side, so it should be interesting because they essentially play the exact role we do for our conference.

tcu has some talent though - 5* rb zach evans could be a 1st round pick, wr quentin johnson was a 4*, same with qb duggan, and they're pretty similar to us on defense. 2019 ole miss had corral who was a mid-4*, and 4* elijah moore, and 5* rb ealy (who was only a freshman)

Evans has undeniable talent but is a major me first asshole. There are reasons why every major program walked away from him. The latest delightful rumors from Ft Worth are that he has demanded to be the starter no matter what or he is transferring. Ole Patterson has got to be loving that

While true Duggan has only really shown flashes (and been honestly better with his ground work ala Garbers end of '18-1st portion of '19) and Evans was only getting like spot touches as 3rd-4th back where as Ealy for Ole Miss was in a committee that he was I'd argue 2nd in (behind Snoop Conner but ahead/even Scottie Phillips).

I can't comment on Johnson because I haven't seen him.

its not going to be worse than Ole Miss. Dallas is much less humid that Mississippi. It could very well be really hot but I am less concerned about humidity

I agree Rugbear. The analysts seem to have scales over their eyes when it comes to the Bears and we never get any respect...

Expand full comment

Totally. No respect. Huskies get all this love and they do crap recently. Oregon claims the crown last year on a joke season after we beat them. Bottom line is that there is not a single team in the entire Pac that Cal can't beat on a good day, and no one sees us as an easy win.

Thanks for the report/update. Looks like the Bears might get two or three of these guys to commit, which would be oustanding.

Seems hopeful we will get some new Bears out of this strong group. If we get the TE then we are stacked there for a few years. Wilcox has recruited coaches at every position that can coach, and recruit, aside from Musgrave, who is more coach. Clearly Wilcox realizes that the best coaches in the world cannot get our Bears to the top of the Pac without the horses we need. When Erickson had the Beavers so good he was able to get top talent to Corvallis. While our Bears have had NFL talent on most every team for many years, we have not had the overall talent to rise above the middle. And as we know, we have to win the trenches, which is clearly the priority of these coaches. Hope springs eternal, but I truly am pumping sunshine on where our Bears can be this year and especially in 2 or 3. Fiat Lux! Go Bears!

Don't underestimate Musgrave's ability to pull in top level QB talent. Both Kai Milner and Justyn Martin committed to CAL in great part because of Musgrave. He's the closer. Hard to deny his NFL creds and I can tell you from my years of coaching, the order of respect of coaches by kids in any program is how far up the food chain they got. I coached for two years with Eric Davis. Even though he only coached for two years he had the most respect of all the coaches because of his time in the pros. I was number 2 on the list because I was the only coach who had played at D1/P5 level. It's a very interesting dynamic, but ultimately the game is about earning respect and respect is given for success.
