According to the On3 Uluave signed for $368k. I hope he graduated, because that's only $184k after state and federal taxes plus your agents fee, if he had one, so the $184k might be smaller. Is it worth it? He might be in a system next year that doesn't cater to his skills ala Ott or he could have a break out season and het drafted and paid. Only time will tell. Best of luck my man and once a Bear always a Bear.

It’s very tough just emotionally and socially to transfer from one college to the next. I’ve been there and done that (in the old days). Even as a great athlete in your respective sport there are so many unknowns. Hope he has a good experience at BYU. I’m thinking that linebackers in particular had a very hard time dealing with Wilcox being fired. Wilcox was not a great head coach but he was a true role model for young athletes trying to figure things out. Too bad Wilcox wasn’t both!!!!

This surprisingly doesn't bother me. While very productive, sometimes I think Cade was too aggressive/out of control - some key penalties at inopportune times, that depending on your opinion, had impact on games/outcome. For example, his unsportsmanlike penalty against hawaii in the 4th quarter putting hawaii close to the red zone . . . and yes, aware many things play into the outcome of a game, not just one play

I want five new commitments today to make up for Cade loss.

Sadly only one today.

Need ten tomorrow to make up for it.

All those LBs who were holding back can now step in!

I am going to miss Cade; he is a great player and leader. I hope he does well at BYU and in the future in the NFL.

IMO it's not a great decision by him from a competitive standpoint, but if he just wants to move closer to his family then I get it.

Cade Uluave will always be welcome in Berkeley! One of the greatest LBs in our program’s history IMO. He carried our team at times over the past 3 years, physically and emotionally, and he clearly put everything he had on the field while wearing the blue & gold. He’s going to be a stud in the league, just like Teddy Buchanan.

Not concerned. I am betting Cal will have a better defense next season than they've had in years. This is a great opportunity for guys like King Salmon or someone else to make their own mark. With Lupoi and Rivera around I have no doubt new star LBs will emerge next season. Last year when Cade was out of the lineup their defense was not worse without him. No disrespect to Cade I appreciate he busted his butt for the program but it's next man up.

Still do not quite understand why Cade left Cal. There will be alot of eyes on Cal this year, improving his NFL exposure. As someone else mentioned, he seemed to lose his Cal “vibe” once he went into the portal. I know he’s from Utah, but still…seems there was something besides $$ going on behind the scenes we will never know. Interesting how last year it was the running back room that took a hit, and this year, the LB core. Cade was a great Bear and hope he has a great senior season.

Exciting times ahead for Bear fans!!

When there's a coaching change there's usually a lot of transfers from players who really liked the former coaches. Many Cal defensive players really liked Wilcox and his defensive schemes while many fans did not.

I was hoping that given the coaching change and the prospects for a much better team, he would have stayed. A real loss.

Uluave’s an aggressive defender, showed great personality and will be missed. However he is prone to injury. In his three years, he logged stats in eight (granted he wasn’t in the rotation until the fifth game of his freshman season), nine and ten games, respectively. Availability is the most important ability, as the saying goes. To me, Raphael on offense is also a big loss, as that battering ram stayed on the field play after play and was dependable and available for a full season. He has signed with rival SMU.

I was hoping Raphael would stay too, to be a reliable complimentary piece to Mohammed. There's some injury question marks with the other guys we picked up.

I think his positive attitude will make him an excellent fit at BYU. I wish he was still with us, but I wish him nothing but the best.

While this is a bummer, we have done so well in the portal overall that I can’t be too bummed. Go Bears!

Justbear's avatar

Yeah, it would have hurt if he left last year, but leaving now doesn't hurt us too much. We are going to have a whole new team with lots of talent.

Love the guy and wish him the best. He doesn’t need to be a Wolverine to make a combine name for himself, so going home makes sense to me. Can’t wait to see him play on Sundays.

Texas or Michigan would have hurt much more. Glad we dropped BYU game...
