We’re currently irrelevant on the HS scene, unfortunately. ASU just picked up a couple of studs plus a Port St. transfer, and Stanford grabbed a 1 & done. As for Cal...I thought Francis & Harriman could recruit...tough to see teams we once were be competing against for talent nab 5* impact players when you’re already looking up at UO, U of A, UCLA & SC. P12 could be loaded next year.
Last year Cal had one of the least talented teams in recent Cal history, and it looks like a lock that Mark Fox is going to send out an even less talented roster next season. I guess the guy enjoys a challenge!
Come on, he’s only been here one year! I guess Cuonzo spoiled us bringing in two 5 star recruits in Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb his first year or was that his second year?!
Anyways, we should be looking locally. If you want JC transfers, Cal should look at CCSF, they were like 30-0, before the season got canceled! There’s got to be at least one or two recruits there. Then there’s the local high schools. But really, I agree, Fox got his work cut out for him. Good Luck!
He's only been at Cal for a year, but he's had an entire career before that, and he wasn't a very good recruiter at any of his prior jobs either. In fact, "he doesn't seem like a good recruiter" was my primary concern when we hired him in the first place, and so far that concern seems to have been pretty well justified. Even Wyking, as shitty of a coach as he was, was a better recruiter than this. Now does this mean I prefer Wyking? Hell no, he was bad at literally every other aspect of the job, while Fox is at least competent to pretty good. But the fact that he was outperforming Fox at recruiting despite his terribleness is not a great sign for Fox's ability.
Agreed, Atoms...this was always the issue with Fox. I was really hoping to see a little more/any productivity from the Thiemann, Kuany, and Klonaris triumvirate. Brown was solid and can give you some minutes, but can he be on the court when you're trying to salt away a lead if he's shooting 50% from the stripe. But counting on sudden growth from the Frosh is suspect.
I thought Kuany showed well toward the end of the season. His length can be a defensive strength but I hope he becomes a better scorer - even though he did hit a couple of 3-pointers at critical times. Otherwise he may end up like Moute a Bidias.
Kuany flashed a little glimpse here and there, and the length, coupled with a modicum of athleticism, is definitely a potential asset...but rapid improvement would be a surprise, albeit pleasant. And the kids played hard - definitely, and we knew Fox was not going to be landing 4 and 5 * guys...But there's no denying that the Bears are losing "solid" at best key pieces, while other mid-tier programs in the Conference are adding impact ones....troublesome
Fair enough, Fox is not a good recruiter. I just read an article about how the Transfer Portal is causing havoc among the big colleges like Duke and Kentucky as a lot of recruits who don't get playing time want to leave. If Fox is that bad a recruiter, then maybe he can try to woo some of these malcontents on other teams looking for playing time?!
Zachery is off the table. Plan B? Plan C?
It makes sense...kid’s from Western NY, and couldn’t visit campus with the restrictions. Unfortunately...

Joel Brown is cat quick but needs to be able to finish around the basket and make his free throws - less than 50% from the charity stripe last season.

lol, "enjoys a challenge" is an amazing way to frame "sucks at recruiting". Well done 😃

Good Luck!
His being a bad recruiter extends to recruiting transfers.
