NATIONAL CHAMPS AGAIN!

Another wire-to-wire win for Cal, just over UW.

Bears complete a sweep to also take the Ten Eyck trophy in addition to the main national title (19th in Cal Men's Rowing history and 103rd for Cal Athletics)!

Cal have won the 3rd Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ titles, but can they complete the sweep and take the main event? That race has just started now!

Men’s rowing was the first sport at Cal, established the same year as the university, 1868. The collegiate champions were sent to the Olympics, and each time Cal went, they came home with the gold: 1928, 1932, and 1948. They got edged out by UW in 1936, so they missed out on the glory of beating the Nazi and fascist Italian boats into 2nd and 3rd in the Berlin Olympics. There’s a great book about it “The Boys in the Boat,” with a movie coming out I believe. Go Cal Rowing!!!

For Men's Rowing, the only race that matters is the Varsity Eights Heavyweight. Cal won their semifinal over Washington. Princeton won the other semifinal over Yale. Because the condition does affect the time, Cal haven't the best time (about 2 seconds) over even Princeton may or may not mean that much. But with Cal being undefeated all year long and having won the same race last year, can't pick against the Golden Bears.

For NCAA Outdoors Track and Field, only the top-8 typically (sometimes only the top-5) will score points. Other than the throwing events, I am not sure Cal will place in the top-8 anywhere else. Cal still got a way to go to become relevant in the team race. They have qualifiers in 13 events across both sex. A team like Florida will have qualifiers in 9 men's events AND 13 women's events. Oregon will send 6 men and 13 women this year.
