Didn't watch this one, but I want to say "defense" isn't really a sufficient critique. Vandy scored 32 points on 20 turnovers, a completely untenable amount. That includes an estimated 18 points in transition of turnovers. So while the defense wasn't especially good, it seems to me like poor ball security allowing easy points for the other team was the biggest issue here.
I was there! Drove in from Memphis to witness this thrashing, one of a few Cal hats in the building. We clearly have some talented players but there was a lot of standing around, poor passing, and a lot of one on one basketball. Clearly they are not yet playing as a team. There will be a lot to learn from this “ wake up call”. I was really sorry that Coach Madsen wasn’t there. I was really looking forward to seeing him in action. They needed his coaching intensity. Go Bears!!!!
I dunno, B, not really sure how big of a deal that was. Wonder if Madsen’s presence even helps in this one. The kids did not look like they belonged on the same floor as Vandy…the defensive effort was as poor as you’ll see.
Blacksher has started 100 games in his college career yet looked completely overmatched against a middling SEC backcourt. There was no toughness, no leadership. Too much experience to show that poorly.
Long, long way to go if this team wishes to even be competitive in the ACC.
If by "interesting" you mean bizarre. Teams sitting on opposite baselines? All that space between the court and the stands? Why would you design an arena that pushes all the fans away from the action?

Might want to play som fefense.
I think that’s my biggest concern.
You always hear defense is about effort. Unfortunately, the D under Madsen has not been nearly good enough to beat quality teams.
Ouch.
Reckon this just shows the difference Mad Dog makes.

Yikes, all around.
Wow, an actual fastbreak👏🏿
Man, wait till we see a Musselman’s defense n Sunday.
Might wait it out a couple of years to hit Cameron Indoor.
Done. Doh!!
Let’s give them the record for steals.
Sigh.
Dort apparently does not have Jokic court awareness.
Kind of an interesting arena.

There was diamond vision thing that looks like an obelisk planted sight level in the corner.
Never seen anything like it. Bizarre.
Omot can at least create his own shot.
It's down to single digits. Go Bears!!
not so fast
Saw that coming. Cal is completely folding under the slightest bit of ball pressure.
Indeed
Blacksher has played a lot of basketball. Sissoko and Tucker too.
Petraitis, JOJ, Campbell and Omot are all juniors. They ALL look completely rattled tonight, and are playing so soft.
Yikes, so where’s the toughness? Mental or physical? Very, very passive.
Who is gonna be the bulldog, when they need one….hmmm.
Sto looks like he’s got a green light
