Part of me understands and accepts how and why we have a below average football program. I genuinely don’t understand how the basketball program hit this truly historic level of rock bottom.
A cascade of ill-advised hires and a lack of institutional attention. I totally agree with you. There is and has always been a much easier route to having a successful ball program at Cal--and at times we have. If this were any other P5 school, there would be concern concern. Here there is only "meh", which is why it's been able to continue.
riffing on my comment in the other bball post, Wilcox & Fox have come up with a brilliant new 'strategery' - put such a bad product on the field (or court) that the sports lose $$, the school can't afford to fire them, & mega-donors get apathetic (buy-out fatigue from starting over every few years?), and BOOM! Job security. I'm going to try this at my next job, right after I get elected to Congress & pull a Gosar.
Dumping Wyking after two years and then giving Fox four for the identical product would be well, bad optics to say the least for this liberal institution. They can't really afford to lose Wilcox (which is hilarious and pathetic), but they will. At some point this University needs to learn that merely kicking the can down the road and hoping to hit jackpot (mixing metaphors here) can and actually will cost more in the end.
You are right: This is WAY worse! Chaminade has a history of upsetting good programs so no surprise that they beat us way back when. UCSD? Come on! I don't care if they are transitioning to the Mountain West. These guys are barely one step above a good high school team. Being a Cal fan can test the faith of the strongest person.
True, tho D2 teams hardly ever HOST P5 teams on their home court...it would probably happen more often with a larger sample size. Doesn’t excuse it, but still....
That said, this is just as bad a loss, bc it’s a home game v a probationary D1 program in year 3 for a coaching regime that desperately needs to show signs of progress. And unfortunately, this team was thoroughly outplayed the final 25-30 mins per game.
Thanks for the article, Rob...tough to read, tough to write...sigh.

I expected this team finish 12th but even this is is surprising.
Agreed.

that's the hidden beauty of such a devious plot: there will never be an 'end'.

Chaminade is d2. That’s always worse. No way a P5 team should ever lose to a d2 school.
