Defense aside, I'm not sure why you guys are lauding Cal's offense. I thought I detected a scheme last season when players were getting open looks, but this year, over and over, it's just the weave followed by a 1-on-4. Defense is effort, and that must improve. But even if it does, I see a lot more balls getting slapped away in ACC play unless we start to run an actual offense.

Agreed. Cal didn't begin to play defense until the 2nd half, but their woes continued even after their offense kicked in. This performance was a repeat of the Stanford game. It's perplexing because I'm sure Madsen and his staff are as confused. We have the physical talent, but not the effort.

Our defensive technique and effort are severely lacking and when you combine that with turnovers on offense it’s fatal. Blackshear was brutal in the first half and Stoja couldn’t guard my grandma on ball

Good call on Blacksher. He’s played nearly 130 games in his career…can’t be giving the ball away with impunity at this level and expect to get the wins.

Thanks Nick.

Allowing 90 ppg is not gonna get you wins. I’m stunned at how easily other teams can score the basketball against this roster, and really not sure where any type of fix is going to come from.

In Berkeley, Madsen has simply not had anything close to the presence that Aziz Bandaogo gave him at UVSU.

That indeed is the "problem." The parts that came together to make this team have either yet to gel, or they are just not the right parts. The transfer portal is a bit of a crap shoot, you just don't know what you are gonna get. Size is a real issue, too, Blacksher seems woefully undersized and isn't half the player we thought he might be (at least so far). I don't know enough about Omot and Campbell since they haven't played much, but we don't seem to have anyone who has a clue on defense right now. Isn't that what assistant coaches are for, to work on this stuff? Sadly, this appears to be yet another disappointment so far. It certainly isn't going to get easier: SDSU, Duke, North Carolina, Clemson, etc. Maybe they can pull it together, but it's not looking good right now.
