Part of the story here is that FSU played better than advertised. Not overwhelming good but largely mistake free and good defense.
No Lee Dort hurt...and the coaching decisions in the first half sort of boggled the mind. Rotating out all but one shooter? Never taking a time out? When the shots stop you have to call a TO and regroup And figure out how to run a play or get a foul.
Kids showed grit in the second half but fell short at the end. The hole was too big to dig out of.
Cal believes in social justice. We love to gift struggling teams wins.
Really sharp analysis on the shot selection issue. The 5-18 on two-point jumpers is brutal, and honestly the fadeaways and baseline pull-ups are such low percentage plays when the defense is set. I've noticed this pattern with mid-major guards too where they get comfortable with thier pet shots instead of working for higher value looks. Cal's gonna need to find a way to attack closeouts better or create more rim pressure off ball movement.
No Dort was definitely the deciding factor. Need him back for Miami. I know he's a limited scorer but he's an underrated interior passer, creates extra possessions on the glass, and sets solid screens. He's important to the offense. Ilic and Kocanas are simply not able to replicate what he brings in total.
Unfortunately, the damage may already be done…this was a big loss, regardless of whether FSU remains a Q2 or not…you can’t lose to 1-6 ACC teams and expect to dance. Now you basically have to beat Clemson, Stanford and SMU at Haas, and cross the country and win at Ga Tech and BC. Razor thin margin for error.
Cal was SO flat at the start and thney couldn't catch up while being so far behind on opponent's home court. They've got to start games with more aggression.
And how to do that without gasing your starters is a good question. Not sure why we are platooning so much. It would be better to gradually mix in the bench. Then again, the coaches know more than I do...
Yeah, we want to believe the coaches know best. However, it was the best coach in the building (John Boeheim, who was a commentator on the telecast) who observed it made no sense to remove Chris Bell from the floor right as he was going on a Chris Bell-esque heater.

The one guy this roster could not afford to lose, honestly.
I made this comment to friends back in early November; too bad it came back to bite us.
100%. Thankful his injury doesn't seem like it's going to keep him off the court for too long.
Making the trip is hopefully a good sign.

Miami becomes another must win, followed by a sweep against GT and Clemson, if we want to keep any slim tourney hopes alive. No pressure Bears.
