There was a time when college athletes were part of the school community. They attended classes (usually) and lived in the dorms, frats and apartments like the rest of the mere mortals. They had benefits like training tables and tutors, but for the most part, they rubbed elbows with the rest of us. These days, not so much, in the revenue sports. Sad.
