The California Golden Bears (2-4, 0-2 Pac-12) fell to the Pepperdine Waves (3-2), 62-74, Wednesday in Malibu, Calif.
The loss ends a disastrous trip to the Los Angeles area, as the Golden Bears weren't able to pick improve after a 56-76 shellacking at the hands of the UCLA Bruins on Sunday. Pepperdine, who early this season took UCLA to triple overtime before their eventual defeat, controlled the game's pace, having a lead as high as 16 points less than one minute before halftime.
California could not stop the Waves from beyond the arc. Pepperdine sunk 46% from downtown, connecting on 12 out of 26 three-point attempts. The Waves also took advantage of turnovers, earning 20 points from the Golden Bears' 15 turnovers.
California standout Matt Bradley led the game in points, scoring 27 on the night, including two from beyond the arc and seven out of nine free-throw attempts. Senior forward Grant Anticevich scored 21 points for the Golden Bears, including two three-pointers, and had eight rebounds.
Troubling for California, graduate transfer Ryan Betley struggled against Pepperdine. He was held scoreless on his five three-point attempts and made only one of his seven shots in 34 minutes of game time.
California's loss against Pepperdine is the first defeat for the Golden Bears in the teams' four meetings.
