I feel like nobody ever wants to talk about Marsalis Roberson he’s probably gonna be the best out of all the freshman

We have barely even seen him.

If he is the best of the FR, he's gonna have to be pretty damn good bc Sam Alajiki is a future All Pac-12 caliber player.

NBA body, with range. Don't see that on Roberson, plus he's got the BOD Dragon curse...but fingers are crossed.

Joel Brown's line tonight was about as bad as it gets for PG: 0 pts, 2 assists and 4 turnovers in 30 mins.

With Fox showing zero interest in recruiting a PG for now the 2nd/3rd(?)straight season.

He played Joel & Hyder in the same backcourt & the game turned. He had Lars in as well - that’s a net negative and the game momentum swung almost immediately. Tough matchup for Joel tho.

Speaking of PGs, I just watched the highlights of the Miami/Duke game. Miami was led by Charlie Moore . . . that Charlie Moore. I can't believe his still in college and playing at another school. How is that even possible?

Agreed…he’s still going…counting his commitment to Memphis, he’s now involved with his 5th school.

He’s been in college as long as Blutarsky….

All in all, a pretty predictable weekend v the LA schools - managed to hang with both for about 30 minutes before the massive talent gap became just too much. The Bears just don't have guys that can consistently score the ball v. elite defenses.

But in year 3, there's definitely signs of progress. Would be nice to see Anyanwu, Alajiki (when healthy) and Kuany get as many minutes as possible. I'd say let's see more of Hyder, but not sure if the minutes will help him.

That's twice Cal has gone with rollers on screens and forgetting to actually guard the player with the ball. Tyger Campbell layup once and a 3 this time.

Seems like cal is getting mugged under the basket but not getting any calls

Love the kid and he's a great Cal Bear, but I am ready for Grant to move on.

I don't agree. He played well vs SC, and although he played terribly this game, he had 8 rebounds and played good defense

Could not disagree with you more. He did not play good defense - he got worked by Mobley when he was down low, and Boogie Ellis went by him like he was standing still, which you admitted.

And he gets his boards strictly by volume, and was responsible for a majority of those offensive boards that SC got. He can't really guard anyone.

He is overmatched v good teams.

He at least draws attention. Brown on the other hand offers nothing on the offensive end. If he was even a modest threat at all to attack the basket or shoot from behind the arc it would take a lot of pressure off Grant and create more space and opportunities for the others.

I meant he played well offensely vs SC, and rebounded and played good defense s UCLA

Same here. Just frustrating when we play more athletic teams and we try to force the action through him.

Agreed.

And he's a great kid....this is just a level of athlete that he really struggles to make plays against, and he doesn't share the ball enough when he's struggling for you to still win. 1-10 just won't get it done, and would love for Kuany and the A &A's to get more minutes at the wing.

THERE'S one of those Kuany plays!

That was a foul on bernald (no call) and then they called a cheap foul on 2K

Too many bad turnovers

Ya...so glad this team is definitely better in year 3 with Fox...

But your guys need to play well to upset a top 10 team, and they haven't

Can't dribble and can't pass right now. What a combination to have as a team.

Every now and then Kuany makes a WOW play that makes you shake your head and say "If only he could do that more consistently."

I think KK is one of those players that maybe started playing hoops just a little late....talent and athleticism-wise, I could see him in the rotation at a blue blood - bouncy, long, lanky, 6'9" kid with some handle....he looks the part, he's just still so raw....

If Fox can get him to stay his 5th year (that extra COVID season of eligibility), he could be a difference-maker....he's just not there yet.

Cal is in the game. Go Bears!

Shepherd had several nice passes. Looks like a PG today … that give and go to Kelly was beautiful

I was critical of him early, but he's sharing the ball much better now, and the squad is better for it.

Thiemann still has stone hands and never looks to pass. Unbelievable his lack of awareness independent of his hook shots so far.

So he IS better, I'll give him that....but he's still not a P12 caliber big.

You can't play Brown, Lars and Hyder at the same time, Fox. Come on.

Expand full comment

Yeah I agree, I am really not a fan of Hyder and Brown being in the backcourt at the same time.

They just become too easy to defend.

3 trips, 1 bucket, a miss and a TO.

Kuany with an immediate turnover....I really am rooting for him but man....

Nice step-back tho!!! Bueno

Cal not getting antsy shots

Man our shot selection has been pretty poor. I'm already indifferent on Joel brown shooting open 3's as it is but man I never want him shooting straight up like he did from the corner. It does look to me like UCLA is rattled after actually having to play a team with resistance like Cal gives which is good.

Watched Matt Bradley ball out on prime time/channel with SDSU...whooped on #20 Colorado St. by 30. SDSU could have a deep run in the tourney.
