Cal Men's Soccer: Bears Futbol Upsets No. 1 Pitt in Pittsburgh
Cal Men's Soccer earned their first ACC win Friday night
Pittsburgh was already Bear Territory on Friday night.
While Cal fans continued to arrive at the Steel City for Saturday’s Cal Football match hosted by the ranked Pitt Panthers, Cal Men’s Soccer (Futbol) took on No.1 Pitt Panthers on their campus.
Check out the ~5 minutes highlight below.
Cal Golden Bears took advantage of a passing mistake by the Pitt near their goal for an early lead. Nonso Adimabua was able to capitalize on the Pitt mistakes for the 20th-minute goal.
When the ACC refs opted to give Pitt an 80th-minute penalty shot controversially (it looks like the Cal keeper was playing the ball and then the contact), Cal keeper Marco Brougher made one of his key 8 saves to preserve the clean sheet.
By the end of the 90 minutes, Cal Men’s Soccer got their first ACC victory to improve to 4-5-2 (1-3-2 in ACC) while Pitt fell to 10-2-0 (4-1-0 in ACC).

Cal Bears had just earned their two ACC draws in their previous three matches: a 1-1 draw versus Virginia in Berkeley, a 1-2 loss at Chapel Hill to North Carolina, and a 3-3 wild draw versus Louisville in Berkeley. Bears will look to keep the good form going in non-ACC matches against Portland and Saint Mary’s before closing out the regular ACC season against Notre Dame and at Stanford.
All ACC men’s soccer teams will play in the ACC tournament.
A Cal team winning a defensive struggle is a good omen for Saturday’s Football game from across the river?
Great win for the Bears! Outshot but had just enough in the tank at the end to keep the shutout. Opportunistic goal by Adimabua was beautiful.
Now that’s some Cal vs Pitt good news. Classic soccer- hang on with your D and then make your chance when you have it!
