It seems like in general even under good circumstances our divers are not at the same level as the swimmers. Given our status it seems like we should be able to recruit good divers.
We do have a diving team, but it just has not been that competitive. This year was particularly weird given when the newly hired coach resigned just when the season was about to start.
The main issue historically was the lack of a platform on campus to practice one of the three discipline. In the past, the divers had to travel to Stanford to train on the platform. This has been remedied by the opening of the Legends Aquatics Center on campus in the fall of 2016, but the diving success has not followed...yet.
In the backstroke isn't there a limit on how far you can stay underwater? Seems like the extended underwater time was what won Cal the 4 x 100 freestyle by 1/100th of a second!!! Gripping!
Marked by the thick yellow lines/marks in our case. Little more than 2/3 of the way. I noticed that after turns, the majority of sprinting freestylers came up way before that, it seems like for them there's a point after which it's faster to freestyle than dolphin kick.

Yes, there is a 15m to surface rule for backstroke, freestyle, and butterfly. I believe it's even video reviewable.
