What do we think the spread is at Wake?

Thanks TD.

Anyone happen to know if Jamaal Wiley is related to early 80s RB Terry Wiley?

Expand full comment

Or Commander Wiley, whose outfit in the Penghu Islands busted Tom Bishop out of Su Chou prison as part of Operation Dinner Out in 2001’s Spy Game?

;-)

Or Wiley Coyote who kept acme in business for so long.

Pretty sure Commander Wiley never suited up for us (alas). Plenty of evidence Wiley Coyote plays for us ALL the time. Terry, tho, was just here for the usual few years.

Thanks for the write up. Good thoughts and we got some momentum going.

If Oregon State is roughly equal to Furd, then Cal should handle Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.

I’ll be there to make sure the Bears stay on track!

Go Bears! Everybody get healthy and primed for another multi-score win!

Agree that CAL should be able to handle Wake, but... using Furd as a bechmark is (at least possibly) not valid. In Shaw's last(?) year they tried to install the slow mesh. Other ACC teams have seen it for a while now, but Furd does have some local knowledge of Wake's O that CAL should not be expected to have.

OH, and my standard shout out to Winston-Salem. Be sure to catch basketball games there. Krispy Kreme #1 (at least used to) stay open late for the friendly crowds after Deacons' games. Most enjoyable...!

Hot glazed Krispy Kreme is an entirely different food item than one of the boxed store bought sugar bombs. It literally melts in your mouth, delicious!

Woody Guthrie, as well as Billy Bragg and Wilco, told me everything in Winston-Salem is against th’ law….

Thanks!

We will probably do ribs somewhere. ; )

Great POSITIVE recap of the game. Thanks! One thing I noticed. No ACC officials. They were? Yes, PAC 12 officials. They had the PAC12 logo on their shirts. I really feel we lost the Miami game because of them. Especially the blown call on TARGETING late on the 4th quarter.

You could argue blowing a coverage and allowing a future NFL WR to go 77-yards with the game on the line is why we lost the Miami game, Coach.

Expand full comment

You could point to a number of plays that would have had Cal winning the game, but the fact remains that the targeting decision was terrible, it came at the most critical juncture, and had it been made correctly, Cal would have almost certainly won the game

Expand full comment

Sure, that could have happened. But there was a lot of football left. Even with the call, Cal wasn’t running the clock out. There were almost 2 minutes left, and Miami still had 3 timeouts. Cal would’ve had the ball at about the 35. Three runs up the middle were likely to force them to use the TO’s, likely gaining minimal yardage because we literally can not run the football.

If Cal makes a 45+ yard FG, ballgame…but chances of that happening with our kicking game were slim. Miami was getting the ball back with about 90 seconds left, even with the targeting. Our D was gassed and that was an eternity.

Tough to blame the refs after you gag a 35-10 lead midway through the 3Q.

Any idea why #19 and #80 played out wide but no #11?

I know it’s easy to pull the numbers but the guys have names you can use.

Sorry. Rogers and King, but not Anderson. Thank you

We've lost 4 games, two against ranked teams, by 9 points. We either let teams come from behind to beat us or choked on last minute field goal attempts. Colorado is 6-2 and ranked 23rd today. Ask me how I feel...

Freshman O lineman Fred Williams seemed to do pretty well and has good athleticism he is a converted wide receiver. Good to see.

Without looking at the film my first impression was that he may play better than Sessions. But is was OSU (not Miami or Pitt or FSU) and I have not looked at the film which really tells the story.

Is there a precedent for a WR turned OL? Wild transition.

Expand full comment

Never heard of it, but there's TE turned into OT so I think it's not that crazy.

Not like for like but AD was a PG to start HS and ended his HS career as a PF/C.

It’s hard to project how much kids will grow from freshman year to senior year. If anything it’s a testament to his athleticism. And I know the staff was very high on his athletic floor having been a former WR. Some skill sets translate and it makes for a unique jumping off point to learning the position at this level

There’s a lot of precedence in basketball. David Robinson famously grew like a foot at Navy. Regardless of size, basketball skills position-to-position are fairly similar. WR and OL skills have little to do with one another.

Our LT looked to be the same size as Trond Grizzell…

How do you feel?

Ha!

Rhetorical "Ha"? lol

Yeah, I am both pleased and anxious. Pleased to beat OSU (so much current history that rankles me). Anxious because this is not the OSU team-level that beat us over the past ten + years.

Honestly, nice result, but little is proven, here. Good for giving us a shot of hopium, yes, but history is not our friend.

I like that hopium stuff. Reminds me of the old days in Ehrman Hall!

Little, heh, I concur. Next game - show me.

Exactly. It’s the type of game Wilcox does not usually win.

We’ll see….
