This game should have not been close. The bears need to play better defense.

Down three starters or pseudo starters and still taking care of business. We’re on the right track. My only concern is that this team is that they don’t share the ball enough for when we start playing the big boys and the 1 on 1 stuff becomes less reliable.

It’s an intriguing team, and totes agree, P, that we’re on the right track. Wilkinson’s athleticism is a new wrinkle, almost as if a switch was flipped.

Not sure we defend well enough to make a run at the bubble, but when/if they get Blacksher and Campbell back, hopefully the O will run a little more smoothly. Omot is basically an ISO specialist, and agreed - not sure you can expect to win many games in the ACC without a competent, efficient offense.

Got my wife to join me and she had a revelation that basketball is fun to watch! Wilkinson was the real difference in the game. Tucker tries but is less capable of dictating the play. Wilkinson isn’t just a ball hog either. Dude is short but can jump out of the gym. Love Dort! He absolutely menaces the interior, changes shots. My favorite moment in the game was a sequence when a Hornet went to the basket and Dort bodied him out of bounds AND knocked the ball into the Bay. Like: Get all that shit out of here!!!

Sac state is a solid team. I respect them. But Cal was too much for them. Rytis is huge for us. Andre is so mellow but can score. Fun team to watch and though our ceiling isn’t too high, we are better than last year and may cause some havoc in the ACC.

Sissoko, a graduate transfer, on whom you would expect to rely for grit, composure and stability, cannot get a technical foul with under a minute to play in the game. Earlier in the game he reacted vehemently to a call as well - whether or not it was justified is another matter - I’m just not sure about his composure. In crunch time I’d actually like to see Dort in there. While Mady has a great skill set, Lee’s game seems more organized to me, though maybe that’s just a reflection of how the two players’ skill sets differ. Sissoko has more range offensively based on the games I’ve seen so far, but Dort is a powerful force inside and knows his role; in the paint he’s strong defensively and he uses his brawn to create leverage consistently on offense. Obviously the Bears are going to need both players to play up to their potential in order to compete in conference play; yesterday they combined for nine fouls, if memory serves. Going forward I hope they combine to be a tandem that opposing coaches really struggle to game plan against; to do this they need to avoid bad fouls. But they both can be dominant at times. BTW, Happy Birthday, Lee Dort.

Hopefully the squad gets healthy soon, but it’s encouraging that they are taking care of business in the meantime.

Thanks BP. Sac State was scrappy. Another game that they probably drop in any of the previous 6-7 years had the injuries been affecting 3 key, big-minute guys.

The stunning development of Jeremiah Wilkinson has changed the immediate future of the program imo. This team has such a higher ceiling…so deep.
