I’m happy for the entire team obviously but I’m probably most happy for Dancy when he hit that 76 yard TD. He has been the ultimate team player on this team and has kind of personified Cal under Wilcox; small, scrappy and never backs down all while doing it with class. When he hit that corner and the DB missed in the ankle swipe I was so happy for him at that moment. He basically iced the game and I am so, so happy it was him doing it!!

Go Dancy! Go Bears!!

Just delightful.

Chase Garbers is carving out a special place in my cold, Cal heart, I gotta admit it.

Despite his limitations, he's won 2 at 'Furd....pretty impressive.

I’m ready for him to come back for his 10th and 11th year of eligibility.

I am pleasantly surprised and extremely happy that my instincts were wrong about Chase not being able to turn the corner in Musgrave's offense, and Musgrave not adapting to Chase's strengths. Could he be a better down field passer, for sure, but he makes up for it by extending drives with his feet. It would (will?) be interesting to see how more of a pure passer might do in Musgrave's offense.

Rugbear's avatar

He has always had the athletic ability. He just needed time to learn and get reps in Musgrave's system. A little more time and you might see him connect on more of those long throws. Btw, i'm hoping he has a low draft score and comes back. One more year with the overall team improvement and he could be a solid early draft pick. And we'd get Kai one more year of experience, probably in the back up role, to get him ready for his reign.

We would be good with Chase next year, no doubt. My concern though would be we lose our future QB to the transfer portal. This day and age and all..

The transfer portal swings both ways and I wouldn't be shocked if we end up with another Davis Webb.

I think Milner will take this as his redshirt year, next year he would be the back up and then he would step into the leadership role with a really great grasp of the offense and what I believe will be a much stronger team by then. Watch how many recruits de-commit from other schools and come back to CAL id we finish by beating both UCLA and USC. Btw, Justin Martyn went to UCLA because he thinks he can compete for the starting job there next year.

Jaydn Ott (4* RB de-commit) was visiting USC today. Maybe he'll be the first!

Yeah, I just dont know much about Millner and if he would be keen on sitting another year. No particular reason for me to expect him to transfer, other than "kids these days" and its technically easier to do so than before.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

It’s absolutely easier to do…night and day. Enter the portal, you get recruited all over again, feel wanted, etc….and can play immediately, no waiver. Free agency is here.

WilderThanGene's avatar

Indeed. The fear was they were trying to make him a pocket QB and discouraging him from running, and the Nevada game was a horrible indication of a horrible year on offense to come. That changed relatively quickly, and maybe I and others read too much into that game at that time. I want to say he didnt run the ball even once that game, but dont remember.

Expand full comment
Rugbear's avatar

I'm not sure if they were discouraging him from anything. We just didn't have enough time and reps in Musgrave's system. His system is complicated and takes much more time and many more reps to master than typical Spread and Air Raid systems. And his first year at CAL we had a one week long Spring training and an aborted Covid season. This is the first real season in his system and I expected some growing pains. If we played ANY of the teams now that beat us this season, I am fairly certain we would now beat them. Don't look at the path this year, look at how we finish. If we stink it up the next two weeks, then we still have problems. If we play well and win then we are on our way to a solid future. Btw, Chip Kelly ALWAYS worries me. The guy is an offensive genius. That being said, we now have one of our own with his full playbook available. ;-)

Most dominating Big Game performance by us that I can remember. I never really subscribed to the "I'd rather go 1-10 and beat Furd than go 10-1 and lose to them," but man this win sure does correct the rest of the bullshit of this season.

What a great win....and we humiliated stanfurd in the process. 636 yards of offense, 352 yards rushing and 284 passing. Billy Musgrave's offense finally showed it's stuff. And our O-line played great. Btw, Will Craig is going to have a tough time getting his job back from Brayden Rohme who had a HELL of a game! He had the pancake block of the game and received a ridiculous penalty, the like of which I have never seen before, for being a totally dominant O-lineman. Fun win and can't wait for the post game interviews on Youtube. Btw, if we beat UCLA and USC to finish the season, even at 6-6 we will go bowling as a team that is peaking at the perfect time. Go Bears!!

So true. Dominant win and I loved the post game interviews with Clark and Hicks where they talked about the true love between the players. It's not rare to hear this sort of thing, but the way they said, and Clark saying it was unique in his experience, makes it feel more special. They've certainly not had the sort of season that makes guys love each other just because they are winning. They've been through shit. They've earned this right to enjoy playing together and I'm just so happy for all of them. Shane Vereen doesn't get enough lover publicly for how he won that Big Game for us back in the day by running for some of the hardest yards I've ever seen gained.

And it all starts with the head coach. That's why, even when I was pissed at Wilcox for some of our losses, I really wanted him to win, because he is a rare and special coach in the world of P5 coaches.

Expand full comment
CalBear91's avatar

Yes. It was never personal with Wilcox, or about how he worked with the team. His hire of Musgrave has proven wise, and the Defense has done well under he and Sirmon. The players clearly love him. Hope the Cal backers pony up any funds to keep him from getting stolen, as I do believe he can consistently take us to bowls and may climb the highest peak if the cards fall right in the years ahead.

Justbear's avatar

I was impressed in watching Wilcox's presser last week, where he only talked about what's ahead and not about the frustrations of the prior week leading up to Arizona game. He was focused on the next game, and he has the team prepared mentally for tonight's performance.

Cal fans should appreciate the ultimate respect Shaw paid to the Cal team, the coaches and especially the defense. For him to go for TD's TWICE, early in the game, was a tell that said, "I need to score and score a lot to beat this team cuz they are going to shut me down."

And he was right. He had to play the only card he had and he got beat down.

Side note: sans a few penalties (was this the highest number of penalties and penalty yards all year for Cal), we would have easily dropped 50.

How about them Bears!!

Remember, we didn't have a lot of reps in Musgrave's system. We are finally there and going forward it should be a lot easier to stay consistent. Hopefully Wilcox stays, There are a lot of coaching openings and a lot of big contracts getting ready to be awarded.

Yeah, you might be right. That was a strange game for the defense because on paper it looked like they did well and shut down WSU in the 2nd half but part of that was WSU taking their foot off the gas and being content with us and them killing time.

Great win for Cal, and I can appreciate the joy of not just beating Stanford, but beating them soundly. Saw that the week before in Corvallis too, ending with a similar crowd on the field celebration. Still, its hard to fully grasp Stanford in the Shaw era being this unsound, even when its inexperienced backups pressed into action in some cases. The ghost of Buddy Teevens must have arisen somewhere in the shadows of Palo Alto.

Great win! Perfect way to take out two weeks and a season full of frustration on Stanford!!

This ranks up there as one of the best and most satisfying Big Game wins.

The coaching staff did a wonderful job preparing the team and the game plan was just about flawless. Buried those bums by halftime.
