Cal Football Strength & Conditioning coach Torre Becton is "expected" to join Texas staff
Hi Sark!
Doesn’t matter what decade, Steve Sarkisian is always ready to poach a Cal assistant coach.
The California Golden Bears will have to make one new hire this year, and it’s a crucial one. Strength and conditioning coach Torre Becton is reportedly making the leap to the Texas Longhorns.
Becton was the strength and conditioning coach at Washington from 2011 to 2013 under then Huskies head coach Sarkisian (the new head coach at Texas), and then defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox.
Former Cal secondary and current Dolphins secondary coach Gerald Alexander had these words.
This potentially becomes a critical hire for Wilcox, who is headed into a very crucial season with a very senior group of players. Making the right strength coach hire to get the players on the right conditioning path when most work might have to be done in isolation will be critical. Wilcox did know Becton’s work previously, but there doesn’t seem to be any direct connections that are easy to identify this go-around.
A few potential names to pursue locally.
Aaron Ausmus, long-time USC strength coach, whose contract was not renewed.
Shaud Williams, Oregon assistant strength coach.
Drew Wilson, the former Colorado strength coach.
S&C coach is such a critical hire. He or she spends more time with the players than any other coach on the staff. When Wilcox was first hired, I stated his S&C coach was the most critical hire. Damn shame Wilcox now has to find a new one. Coach Becton will be tough to replace.
Loved this guys energy that he brought pregame and during taped workouts. Hope for the best for the big man.
