On a side note:

I notice we play Auburn next season.

Near as I can find, Demetris Robertson ended up there.

I guess he got tired of being buried at UGA.

Nope, I don't see it.

There must be reasons why he left Clemson!

I just don’t get why we would want TEs who can’t stretch the field unless Wilcox is forcing a power run style on Spavital. Pure blocking TEs are a thing of the past and make life easier for defenses with one less threat on the field.

As for Terry, I’m excited for him. Oregon State showed a desire to incorporate TEs into their passing game and he has the physical tools to be an attractive TE at the next level. I think he’ll do well in their offense.

I CAN'T REMEMBER ANY SERIES OF MAL EVENTS TO OFFSET THE AMAZIG NUMBER OF QUITS THIS SEASONFROM A CAL FOTBALL TEAM. SO NOW, WE JUST HAVE TO FORGET ANY POSSIBLITY OF FINDING AND RECRUITING ANYONE IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO PLAY R CAL?? TIS IS TOTALLY ABSURD. I DEFINATELY LIVED TOO LONG TO SEE THIS HAPENING TO MY HOPES AND DESIRES TO EVER SEE CAL IN THE ROSE BOWL.. OSKII AND I SHALL JUST HAVE TO CRY OGETHER! GERBEAR

Sorry Gerbear. This is our new world. Tradition and pageantry is out the window. CFB is now a big business with all of the cash from TV deals sloshing around. Cal, like a chrysalis, will have to evolve and eventually beak free of its cocoon.

The upside is we're getting a lift from the Portal with transfers in.

Semi-pro, as others, here and elsewhere, have said, is the new reality of college football.

Scholar-athletes? USC and several other programs have destroyed that tradition and expectation long ago. Just as the world is becoming a strange place for many of us, so, too, evolves college football. I just hope this great game of football can continue.

On a final note, I do not resent this semi-pro status. For all these years, these young men have risked the same kind of injuries professional players are risking. Now, something other than hardy handshakes and full ride scholarships can give them some, not likely enough, compensation for their risks. But, sadly, it also means players become like free agents and go more for the money than education, not that it has not been happening some places before.

GERBEAR!

It’s the nature of the portal, nothing more. If kids had to sit a year (old

paradigm, so apples to apples) we’d see FAR less movement, and Kai would be our gun slinger….

He's from Richmond, CA! So he's going to some football and MAYBE go play at the next level. Then what come back to the Bay Area? I wouldn't make that trade for nothing in the world. Going to CAL and living the Bay Area was one of the greatest trades I ever made in my life! To learn, meet present and future innovators is a once in the life time move!

Expand full comment

Of course you wouldn’t make that trade for nothing.

But maybe you may make that trade for something, like a chance to play football at a place that features the TE in their offense. And a far better chance to both win and prepare for a shot at your dream (the NFL).

I wouldn’t underestimate what Jonathan Smith is building in Corvallis and the draw that has for a football player. Also, Corvallis has that “college town USA” feel to it which may seem refreshing to him.

Best of luck to JT; here’s to hoping he doesn’t torch us in the coming years.

Isn't that where Animal House was filmed? If so, it's got a classic college feel and look, much like UOP.

Yes, OSU is emerging strong to very good and I am sure that is part of the draw. Also, some of these guys may be looking at our schedule for next season and thinking what we're all, still thinking- "We might do another 4-7 or, even, 3-8."

Animal House was U of Oregon frat, and town shots in Cottage Grove just south of Eugene (which is like driving into 1978….). Corvallis (OSU) feels to me like a Midwest/Big10 college in the fall (land grant school, open fields, etc.).

Oops. I guess I should do my homework before posting. Okay, thank you.

And I do agree OSU is no longer a dark horse. They are established and growing.

They’ll be in the discussion for P12 Championship game next season.

Unfortunately, our Jonathan Smith-type HC candidate just got hired by our fiercest rival.
