mmmm, while he is potentially a league playa the key word is "potential". best of luck to him but Cal needs more athletic OL to be a contender in the Pac-? (6 or 4).
Wish Coleman the best, but maybe a clean break and fresh start for all OL parties involved might not be the worst thing…hopefully Vatikani sticks tho.
Michael Luckhurst season! He really came on the final few weeks with kickoff duty especially in the Big Game. Plus he ran on cold at OSU and made a field goal, that's worthy of compliments.
So Longhetto says he's going to the next level, but not NFL. So perhaps he thinks other conferences are a higher level than Pac12? Or other schools are better than Cal?
FBS teams are limited to 85 athletic scholarships. As players age, a business decision has to be made whether to keep that player on scholarship. Wilcox takes a not-uncommon approach to special teams players. Almost all of them come in as PWO, asking them to pay their own way with the implication that they will get a scholarship later if they develop well. Scholarships are reserved more for offensive and defensive players who can make/break a season.
As a player progresses and approaches undergrad matriculation, he needs to be a) accepted at a post-grad program and b) be worth keeping on scholarship.
Longhetto's 65% FG percentage makes him 99th out of 111 out of FBS kickers. His rate has decreased every year at Cal. Meanwhile, Luckhurst is waiting in the wings and he's pretty good. He's got a big leg for kick-off and has a low bar to be better than Longhetto. That alone may be the reason why not to extend his scholarship, but I have no inside knowledge on that.
Longhetto is a 23 year-old 5th-year senior. I don't know his grades or what grad program he is qualified to do after getting his Interdisciplinary Studies undergrad degree. UC Berkeley does not grad schools that are easy to get into except for a couple single-year diploma programs. But Longhetto is not an NFL prospect and most people won't spend a year of their life working their ass off for a certificate that's not in his preferred field.
So Longhetto is doing the logical thing. Graduating. Sticking his name into the portal to see if some other team will pay for some of his graduate degree of his choice. It's a free option. But only 15.4% of 2021 graduate transfers (477 of 3,097) went to a new school, so it's probable that it means nothing and he'll move on to the next stage in his life.
Yeah I get that completely. I'm always never against grad transferring because i understand all of that. I'm just pointing out that he called it "next level" instead of "next stage"
Very illuminating comment, explains a lot. One of the key benefits of WFC -- besides the occasional yucks and venting -- is getting a clearer understanding of various topics such as this.
Damien Moore to the portal.
afraid to compete
Afraid of incompetence is probably more likely.
Stupid and unnecessary comment. Good luck to Ben
First time on the internet?
Better get on those OC and O Line hires
This is the opposite of improving our OL

Mick’s kid moving up. Love it. Let’s hope the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Ummmmm and I seem to recall he made a few key tackles with excellent technique (ty, to his rugby experience).
Could be your starting PK for 3 more years…

It's not his decision alone to make.

Well put, OD! + 1!
Luckhurst will be fine.
2023 Cal will go 9-3. I said it here first.
Landing Brennan Marion at OC and he brings Hudson Card…would be a good start!
Read his bona fides, sounds good to me.
And hopefully some OL portal recruits with him to protect Card.
