Welp, with basically no notice, we’ll be opening the season with a road trip to SoCal! After our game against Arizona State and their game against Utah were cancelled due to positive COVID tests, this contest between UCs was thrown together at the last minute.
UC L.A. wasn’t on our latest football schedule, so this gives us the opportunity to continue our streak of games against them—otherwise we would have snapped our streak of games that started in 1933. This will be our 91st meeting, with the Baby Bears leading the series 54–34–1 (with a forfeited and a vacated game in there, which is why the numbers don’t add up).
UC Los Angeles is 0–1 on the season, losing their opener to Colorado last week, 48–42.
Use this thread to comment on the game and also join in on our livestream if you’ve ever wondered what Rob’s bedhead looks like.
Kick-off is scheduled for 9 a.m. PT on FS1. But at this rate, something’s probably gonna happen between now and then and the game will be cancelled. Thanks, world! I’ve told y’all that life sucks and none of you believed me.
Our trap plays are not working. FUCLA is getting immediate penetration on our pulls and getting in our offensive backfield. I'll go back to my earlier thought: you can't run effectively inside against a 6 or 7 man box, especially if they are getting penetration. We need to stretch the field and isolate defenders with numbers: run some QB read/options, some RPO's and PA's, some jet sweeps, and let's throw some more deep balls.
Too early to tell, but looks like a rebuilding year based on how unimaginably bad we're doing. At least we we peaked last season with a bowl game win against a Big 10 opponent and a great win against Stanford. I can take some solace in that.
This is a tough break for Cal with a new offense, last minute game, onerous Covid restrictions from Berkeley and very little practice time. This would have been an especially good year to start with a small conference opponent, knock some rust off and still get a win.
Our tackling problem comes from the fact we are waiting for them to come to the tackle and allowing them to 'make a move' instead of aggressively attacking and forcing them them to freeze as we hit them. Right now we are playing like a bunch of pansies that don't want to hit anyone. I know that's not our D, so I have no clue what is really going on. Someone on D needs to take a leadership role and start tagging UCLA ball carriers, hard.
Don't like that call. Haven't shown they're capable of a play like that, let alone late on 4th down.
61 missed his block....

Ugly.
at least we get the ball to start the second half
I've gotta bike ride scheduled for noon, so hopefully I'll come back to a comeback win...
You can watch the game on the peloton, my dude
Nah, this is a real ride. Headed to the beach. Wondering if it's windy out. Maybe that's why Musgrave isn't letting Garbers throw.
Missed tackles spotted the Bruins 14 points and dropped passes cost us at least 2 first downs. All this is self inflicted.
Chip Kelly calling to with 30 seconds to go... classic chip

these cal penalties are not helping
Crack high is over... I'm feeling the aftermath of bad drugs
crack in second half!
Guys, we might suck
I understand this is the first game, but this is ridiculous
not a good first half: dtr third td pass
I don't know what I was expecting, but this is worse...
This is an absolute shitshow in all phases.
Special teams gets a pass
Terrible, terrible call, ref.
Refs are missing a lot of stuff out there. That tackle the blocked Bynam was a block in the back.
It’s classic cal football
Uh, buckle up, young person. You ain't seen the long road leading up to this.
We’re a joke
Pick/fumble sixxxxxxx (please)
PLEASE
Polk was falling down
We’re a joke. Classic Cal Football
I thought we got rid of negabear trolls years ago.
Looks like Garbers reset back to Garbers
this is not the garbers we are used to seeing
Shut up announcers... "Sounded like helmet-to-helmet" when it clearly wasn't.
Welp, at least DTR got his bell rung.
Yeesh
Sigh...
yikes, garbers picked off a tip
Our wrs can't catch
Our defense can't tackle
Our qb can't throw
Oh, my!
Yikes: UCLA QB DTR is 10/18 for 163 yards passing, 2 TD, 1 INT and 44 yards on the ground on 9 carries and 1 rushing TD
Be down by three at the half, we'll be good.
Be down by 10 to 13 at the half, and we'll be good?
Was that optimism before the INT? :(
Had same exact thought
And...no.
Cam Goode needs to get serious about lifting weights. That's the second arm tackle he has let go.
This would've been a sack for 20ish yards loss, but can't tackle.
Best defense is a bad pass that wr can't catch!
3-and-out, hmm, where have I seen that before?
offense is hot garbage. season is fubar. meh
Exhibition season
Wake up, offense!!
UCLA is stacking the box and playing press. We need to throw long balls at man coverage.
Waiting for Remigio
No PI?
It was a clean play.
That was good timing on ucla db
Crawford caught a pass!!
Where's musgrave's te usage?
If this is our D, then we're "D" for done.
*secretly hoping COVID stops the rest of our season.
Score doesn't reflect how lopsided the game has been
It might have been better if the game was canceled!
at least ucla missed their pat

Like Jaylin Hawkins or Ashtyn Davis?
Did everybody see what Ashtyn did to Cam Newton?
Changed. You're welcome.
