We finally got goood ass talent and now they gone…

Calbears93's avatar

I’m so bummed. How many years do we have to endure this garbage? So many lesser universities finding success. We don’t make a commitment to sports but expect our alumni to do the same.

TezCalipoca's avatar

This is what bothers me the most. We need to be beating OSU , Arizona, and WSU all the time, everytime. That's my minimum expectation

Justbear's avatar

I miss the days when we were dominant on both offense and defense. Those were fun to watch.

HaasBear's avatar

Fire Knowlton. Fire Wilcox. Fire Musgrave. Preemptively fire Mark Fox.

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Fire their replacements too, even before they start. That’ll send a strong message that we won’t accept mediocrity

Justbear's avatar

It's like when I order two beers when I sit down first. Always have a second one ready because it will be needed before the server comes back.

Justbear's avatar

Max Browne looks like Joe Burrow

bigaddi's avatar

Any guesses on the stupid cliches Wilcox will say in his press conference

Rick Chen's avatar

lately, he's been a fan of saying: (opponent) is a good team. we can't win football games when we don't get into the end zone. we have to play better football

OC Bear's avatar

he really can't say much more. We can all see what the issues are, and throwing the OL under the bus is not a good look for a coach. (The Pirate was really tacky calling out his own players.) JW could throw the Line coach under the bus, but if that is the case, he should fire him.

OC Bear's avatar

This is on me, and unfortunately, the team has not gotten better, so I hereby resign effective immediately.

HoodBear's avatar

β€œWe need to execute better. It’s starts with me”

GoldenBear88's avatar

I think that he may just stare at the camera. There are no words for this season.

Calbears93's avatar

We didn’t play well. Have to play harder. Have to execute and players didn’t. Same BS

Justbear's avatar

We gotta play better

Archon79's avatar

This feels WAY worse then the end of the Dykes era

Calbears93's avatar

Yep. This offense is the worst. Can lose but but can’t lose and be this ugly. Why TF does this program keep trying the same thing…

Justbear's avatar

I want to not care about Cal football, but I'm still mad again tonight.

sinkerslider's avatar

I wonder how much of the early success was DeRuyter?

sinkerslider's avatar

Squeezing him out for Sirmon made zero sense.

OC Bear's avatar

Just remember folks, winning off the field is important too (or did she mean, in lieu of????)

Calbears93's avatar

That was worse than the Colorado game. We are almost as bad as Colorado and that is saying something.

GoldenBear88's avatar

NOTHING was worse than the Colorado game (maybe Arizona the previous year). This was bad, but not that bad. The Beavers are well coached and play defense the way that we used to so I will give the Beavers credit for playing great football. They may upset Oregon in the Apple Cup.

AndyPanda's avatar

That won't happen, since its Washington and WSU that play the Apple Cup.

GoldenBear88's avatar

Thanks Andy. I was so riled up from the debacle that I witnessed that I forgot that Oregon and OSU play "the Civil War".

AndyPanda's avatar

We don't do that anymore either; its now the more politically correct "Rivalry Game". (Unclear if that's because its often not very civil, or if "war" is too uncomfortable a concept.)

Calbears93's avatar

That wasn’t even a football game. Was the offense on the field? I remember one pass to Hunter. That’s it. Seriously. What a disaster.

David's avatar

Take a look at the injuy list.....it's hard to succeed when your OL is all injured.

Justbear's avatar

We may not have starters, but we have no excuse for backups playing this badly, or if they are just incompetent, then no excuse for poor recruiting

Bowlbasaur's avatar

Does Cal has the worst Athletic Dept in the P5? Maybe Rutgers or Vandy or something? And bragging about Olympic sports is like corporations bragging about ESG- its fine if the fundamentals are strong but otherwise its a clear indication management has no idea what they’re doing.

OC Bear's avatar

hey now, Vandy won a conference game today, beating Kentucky on the ROAD.

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Candy broke their 26-game conference losing streak today

HoodBear's avatar

Wilcox has lost this team. See ya in 2 years folks.

GoldenBear88's avatar

Jeez....The third stringers are kicking our ass! This is bad.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Wilfox isn’t going anywhere.

David's avatar

Only if you're willing to pick up all the years left on his salary.

Bongo Bear's avatar

Is there really zero chance that Wilcox gets canned after this season? Even if we lose 8 to end the season?

Archon79's avatar

Im curious how the wealthy Cal boosters are gonna react to a 9 game losing streak to end the season.

TezCalipoca's avatar

Oh we wealthy folk are reacting with sadness. ( I was wealthy in spirit until this game)

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I'm curious how the wealthy Cal boosters reacted to the extension of a patently average HC.

goldenone's avatar

Well he is the dude with the endowed chair...

Archon79's avatar

Last year you could talk about all these mitigating factors to underachieving. This year?

It’s over, its just a matter of whose paying to end it.

O.Overall's avatar

I feel like it should be a for cause firing almost. I mean this is just total garbage. It’s just offensive

CrouchingNinerHiddenTinyHands's avatar

Rule #1 of being a nepotistic College Football Coach: Seek job opportunities at Cal.

Rule #2: Hire ya boys

Rule #3: Never play a talented backup but do play an untalented backup

Calbears93's avatar

Fire people Now. Send a message. If you don’t we can’t take you seriously as a coach that cares about this program.

Archon79's avatar

At this point it doesn’t matter, the program needs to be blown up in the offseason.

Bear19's avatar

What a disgrace. FIRE THE WHOLE GROUP OF THESE LOSERS NOW.

CrouchingNinerHiddenTinyHands's avatar

Really tired of hearing Yogi Roth apologize endlessly for Wilcox.

Yeah we will go heavy in the portal Yogi. We’ll lose all of our talent in the portal because of your boy.

Bluehenbear's avatar

We will end up hitting the portal and end up with less

GoldenBear88's avatar

Milner deserves a chance for no other reason than Plummer is just AWFUL. Was he even trying on those last two plays? He missed both of those receivers by at least five yards.

Stanfurdstinks's avatar

Plummer isn't awful, but he can't win with this weak pass protection. Kai is more mobile. It's a no brainer to play Kai....at least give him an honest shot. What we are doing is not working.

sinkerslider's avatar

Somebody tell Fleming that we already have 18 offensive lineman

OC Bear's avatar

I think they were suggesting we try to get some P5-level lineman, not FCS guys

sinkerslider's avatar

How do you have 18, and then can't come up with 5?

Justbear's avatar

Well we went portal and got a Montana State OL who got injured and was replaced, which allowed Vatikani to start.

HaasBear's avatar

Oh. Quality matters?

Archon79's avatar

This team ain’t beating Stanford, folks.

Archon79's avatar

At least Knowlton won’t be able to pretend beating Stanford equals a successful season like he did last year.

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Fire Wilcox this week so they’ll give him a going away win like Joe Kapp.

GoldenBear88's avatar

I was at that game. It was the only time I sat on Tightwad Hill and we beat a good Stanfurd team. If that is what it takes to win next week, then so be it.

TezCalipoca's avatar

How dare you type such words!

O.Overall's avatar

We are down 28 w 6 mins left …. and Plummer is still playing!!!

You wound me, JW, you wound me

Rick Chen's avatar

he's the starter for a reason right? /shrug

O.Overall's avatar

Assume arguendo Plummer was the best QB in the nation. No way you’d play him now due to injury risk

HaasBear's avatar

We should just fire everyone and the let the WriteForCalifornia game chat call plays next week. It honestly couldn’t be any worse than this.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I'm dialing up play action on the first play of the game...it would go for 30.

Justbear's avatar

Then QB draw on the next play.

TezCalipoca's avatar

I script the first 32 plays to go to Ott.

HaasBear's avatar

I’ll tell you what we’re not doing, a damn end around.

HoodBear's avatar

If I did my job this poorly…

TezCalipoca's avatar

You'd be a billionaire

Justbear's avatar

Plummer is still playing 😑

O.Overall's avatar

Even putting aside that we want to see Milner, why risk getting the first string QB injured in garbage time?

GoldenBear88's avatar

Does this game mean we aren't going to the Rose Bowl?

TezCalipoca's avatar

No, we still have to play that game. ( Or are we home against LA)

Justbear's avatar

Less than half left in 4th quarter and our offense still has not scored.

OC Bear's avatar

We try to be good guests when we visit schools and not run up the score on their home field.

Archon79's avatar

Is there a team in power 5 that Cal would be favored to beat right now?

HaasBear's avatar

Real answer, maybe VA Tech.

Bongo Bear's avatar

Am I misremembering or did FTX pay for part (all?) of the field deal with crypto? Knew that was going to be a gigantic mistake.

GoldenBear88's avatar

Maybe that is why we suck this season. FTX and cryptocurrency are just bad mojo. Ask anyone who has invested in that garbage lately.

Justbear's avatar

They paid in cash, whatever that they paid til now.

O.Overall's avatar

I guess Q is if Cal converted the Bitcoin to cash. My guess is they probably did

Bongo Bear's avatar

So apparently Learfield accepted the full payment in cryptocurrency on behalf of the university.

https://calbears.com/news/2021/8/23/cal-athletics-ftx-unveil-10-year-landmark-relationship.aspx

Justbear's avatar

Yeah, so I guess FTX paid in Bitcoin but we got cash.

Bongo Bear's avatar

I see, that’s a relief. Thanks for clarifying.

Justbear's avatar

I don't know how much we got though. How much was remaining to be paid

Justbear's avatar

Now we see Millner right.

OC Bear's avatar

nah, garbage time for Plummer to pad his stats so they look half-way decent by end of game

HoodBear's avatar

Can’t believe what I’m watching LMFAO

HaasBear's avatar

Musgrave is such a disaster. We were doomed when Wilcox refused to fire him after Colorado.

Archon79's avatar

This is beyond Musgrave, this is a program

wide failure.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

It is. Systemic.

And leadership's continued reliance on COVID as an excuse for incompetence.

OC Bear's avatar

I will admit taht I was extremely disappointed in all the fans buying that covid excuse. (not saying you were Jimmy, but I would have hoped that those connected to Cal had better critical thinking skills to recognize that covid affected every Uni and the Admin was just blowing smoke....)

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Exactly. Hey, the COB sucks in the COVID regard, everyone can agree.

But to have the team completely fall apart in the face of a hardship that everyone had to deal with, albeit at different degrees, is the sign of an unhealthy program.

HaasBear's avatar

Agreed. Knowlton should be the one to go.

Calbears93's avatar

Yep. Wilcox losing his job as well

HaasBear's avatar

No he’s not.

Knowlton is an idiot and gave him a big extension.

Musgrave, Wilcox and Mark Fox are a symptom, Knowlton is the root of the issue.

angelcarverblues's avatar

We are the kings of sh*t mountain.

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Yay I can post more emojis

πŸ‘‘πŸ’©πŸ”

Calbears93's avatar

Backups in for Oregon state and still…nothing

angelcarverblues's avatar

Rooting for your team during difficult times is way harder than jumping on a bandwagon and only accepting perfection. You try it here in Corvallis.

WilderThanGene's avatar

The problem is the sense of futility when you believe your institution simply doesn't care as much as you do and is complacent with said times being indefinitely difficult.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

There is a big gap between difficult times and perfection. No one is expecting perfection.

angelcarverblues's avatar

I expect a lovely night in the Willamette Valley and the happiness of being to my first game in four years.

angelcarverblues's avatar

It turned out nice. I don’t mean that I like losing but I know Musgrave is gone and we’ll still have our stalwart band and fans.

angelcarverblues's avatar

Also worst and weirdest field rush ever.

Probably Voodoo Donuts? Those are famous up here.

My email to Knowlton,

β€œJim my boy, I must say: having loved Cal since my first memories during the Snyder era; having watched that administration botch retaining Snyder; having watched mooch fail us and then endured the Holmoecaust; having watched some fake Native American and stinky hippie lady hijack long long long overdue stadium renovations and a decade overdue program wide uptick that prevented me from taking my father and grandfather (both veterans and blues- one a regent and former attorney for the university) to a game before their passing due to literally no ADA accessibility; having watched Tosh Lupoi literally Judas his alma Mater for aglorified canoe and 500 grand…This is an entirely new low. And not by a little. We have a clan of nepotistic coaches from that liberal arts university up north driving this football program into the ground and basketball is not that far behind.

Why? How many national championships does Oregon have? How many Jimmy Doolittles does Oregon have? How many Earl Warrens? How many inventions that could literally be linked to saving democracy? I can keep going all day…It’s a crap college with a trendy football program that is nothing historically.

We need someone who has pride in this program and this university. Someone who knows and respects what Joe Roth was. Someone who doesn’t blame their own shit performance on the city of Berkeley or empty stands during yet another 3-9 season. Someone that knows that the greater Bay Area is perhaps the greatest recruiting hot bed in football history. Someone that knows to recruit locally. Someone that knows that Tillman, Brady, Allen, Adams, et al all grew up locally and were spurned by Cal for overrated Arizona and Texas recruits and that they are the key to bringing this program back.

Troy Taylor is that man. And until he or another alum of the greatest university on the planet is announced as head coach I’m sorry but count me out.

Even by recent Cal standards this is extremely painful to watch. And it’s not just this year either and not just the drunken grumblings of a few young blues either. It’s cross generational and it’s not going away. The old blue apathy that protected bad administrations of yore is dying off quickly and even by those standards this current iteration of Cal athletics is not only pink slip worthy but worthy of a β€œdon’t let the door hit you on the head on your way out”.

Thanks. Do your job and resist your first instincts which are apathy and nepotism or it’ll be your name after #fire next broadcasting endlessly across the alumni network.

Thanks and try not lose a baseball or gymnastics program in the process.

Sent from my iPhone”

I know what you’re thinking. Do I really think I’m helping by sending such an email?

Why yes. Yes I do. This shmuck needs to understand that blue bloods with Cal roots do exist and I will not shut up until he’s in the unemployment line. This is an unforgivable sin. He is literally responsible for driving our entire athletics program not only into the ground but perhaps out of existince. F Wilcox! F Musgrave! F Greatwood and double mother F Knowlton! I guess if you’re cool with being the generation that sat idle by during the dissolution of Cal athletics then just go on about your day and keep your mouth shut full of apologies and that old blue apathy we all β€œlove.” Btw great call on FTX lmao!

HaasBear's avatar

So love your thought process but Knowlton is the real problem. Tell him to resign.

OC Bear's avatar

you had better send it to teh Chancellor, as I'm sure that Jimmy Boy blames covid adn the COB...

Calbears93's avatar

Wilcox is done. Im around enough slums to know.

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Interesting, maybe that’s why he hasn’t bothered dealing with Musgrave ?

GoldenSD81's avatar

Wilcox is so lost in the woods and we have two more years to watch him fail.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Because there is no oversight here. You're 10 games under .500 and get an extension...

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Plenty of people complained, Bob, as there was zero need to extend Wilcox...he still had multiple years left on his contract. It made no sense...Knowlton literally rewarded him for saying no to the Ducks.

OldSoCalBear's avatar

Well hmm Wilcox not afraid to bench a kicker

OC Bear's avatar

yeah, that'll improve our chance of winning

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Exactly. That's f-ing funny!

Justbear's avatar

Because there's no ST coordinator so Wilcox doesn't need to worry about hurting anyone's feelings
