It is that time of the year: The California Golden Bears start the 2021 college basketball season on Tuesday, Nov. 9, in a match-up against the UC San Diego Tritons.
The Golden Bears will have something to prove after being picked to finish last in the preseason media poll.
Veterans Grant Anticevich, Andre Kelly and 11 other returning players are back for the Golden Bears. Last week, in a 92-58 exhibition win against Cal State LA, Anticevich scored a game-high 23 points. Kelly was not too far behind with 17 points and five assists.
Kelly is the top scorer and rebounder among returning players with 10.3 and 6.4 per game, respectively.

watched a few minutes in the 1st half, when Cal was still leading, & said out loud (to an empty room) 'wow this is going to get ugly; this is a bad basketball team'. Knowlton probably isn't bold enough to take any action unless he's forced to, so the revenue sports are going to stay at the bottom.
Wilcox to Knowlton: let's talk under-achieving, vanilla coaching that drives fans & recruits away, but ensures we have consistent mediocrity for a decade.
Fox: : hold my beer!
Even if that's no longer a catch-phrase, are these 3 boring AF white guys the best Cal can come up with in this century? Good lord, if I could afford to buy them all out at the same time, I would. In a heartbeat.
And Grant can't create his own shot....TBH. At best, he can back a guy off a little and then try a fadeaway jumper, but his shot is not consistent. He is going to miss Matt Bradley the most.
I don't have to know a damn thing about basketball to know that Cal should not lose to UCSD. Period. Ever. I've been a rabid Cal basketball fan since 1987. My feet were on the floor when Jason Kidd dribbled by at the Coliseum. I stormed the court when Kevin Johnson lead the way to beat UCLA. I traveled all the way to Spokane to watch Cuonzo face Hawaii and see us lose. My devotion is not in the stratosphere, but I'm sure up in the clouds somewhere. Fox is a perfectly fine human, but his teams lack both the talent and execution to compete in the Pac 12. Major donors have to insist to Knowlton that he do something or lose his own job.
Can we fire Fox now? Getting pushed around by UCSD on our home floor is Wyking-esque. One game in and I’m ready to ask about how his contract is structured.
He has three years remaining on his contract (21-22, 22-23, 23-24) and it would cost $4.725m to buy him out right now.
Not to throw more gasoline on this dumpster fire, but it would have been cheaper to fire him at the end of Year 2 (by March 31st 2021) than it would cost now. In that case it only would have cost $3.84375m.
That's right, we're paying nearly ONE MILLION DOLLARS to prolong the inevitable and fire him at some point this year (unless we decide to burn the program to the ground and let him stay during year 4).
Also, I noticed we're playing OSU at home on a Thursday in early December, but then travelling to Utah for the Sunday game. Don't understand some of the scheduling.
Weekday workday schoolday games seem like a wasted game date in a world where audience and gate matter. WSU played at noon; can you sell enough hot dogs for lunch to make up for drawing just a fraction of the audience a Sunday thru Thursday evening game would?
That makes some sense then. I thought it might have been part of a mens/womens doubleheader. Honestly, it's probably best if no one knows we're here this year.

Watching this team hoist pretty much nothing but low-percentage deep jumpers was a sight to see....
We will not win a single game this year. Not one.
I was hoping for best case of 10...tough to see 5 if this was any indication.
What the hell happened here
I lost 2 hours of my life that I will never get back watching that game. Grant and the new pg are the only 2 that can score.

That the poll was correct?
They would be relegated...the best Big West team should replace them....

Way to sh*t the bed guys.

Another historic achievement for Cal basketball; the first win for UC San Diego over a Pac-12 team, and its by double digits, 80-67.

BTW here are the receipts (courtesy contract details here: https://www.californiagoldenblogs.com/2019/7/23/20706539/california-golden-bears-basketball-mark-fox-pac-12)
Costs to buy out his contract if fired during Year 2 (on or before March 31st, 2021)
Year 3: 1.65m * 100% = 1.65m
Year 4: 1.725m * 75% = 1.29375m
Year 5: 1.8m * 50% =.9m
Total: $3.84375m
Costs to buy our his contract if fired during Year 3
Year 3: 1.65m * 100% = 1.65m
Year 4: 1.725m * 100% = 1.725m
Year 5: 1.8m * 75% = 1.35m
Total: $4.725m
Great post! Thank you. There is no amount of money that justifies a consistently losing team.
Hot garbage
That's an insult to hot garbage!
Not a promising start. Even if we eek out a W.
It's all jump shots from deep, and they don't shoot jump shots at a high percentage.
Is Fox vaxxed?
How/why is Cal down 4 of their "important" players before they ever played a game?
Alajiki kept a rebound alive on the offensive end, played solid D and hit a 3. Quality first 2 minutes.
If AK is taking jumpers, we have no rebounding whatsoever.
Thanks Rob!
Rough start for Grant - Anticevich burned twice now
Thrice

Those are the 2 extra games added to get from 18 to 20 conference games.
A 2pm game on a Tuesday? It's as if they don't want anyone to know we have a mens basketball program.
It’s part of the all day tip-off on the pac-12 networks. So I get why they did it. I just don’t like it as well.

Which they are. Women play at 7!
