Multiple opportunities to win this game in the last 12 seconds and Cal failed each time. I still don't understand if it was the play call or that Curry made a mistake driving to the bucket and shooting w/ 9 seconds left? If it was the play call than it was terrible, successful or not. If it was Curry going for the hero play, welp she learned this isn't high school and the bigs in the Pac12 will swat weak shit away. She should have at minimum drawn a foul. But why shoot it with 9 seconds left? Then Cal had 2 more opportunities w/ less than 9 seconds and blew those as well. Frustrating loss.
I think Cal matches up better w/ Wazzu than Udub, albeit Wazzu is a better team. Smith will need to play Mia, Michelle & Cailyn more in this next game to keep guards fresh.
I was at an event and didn't watch this game, however it sounds like another heartbreak loss. I'm sure they are taking a toll on the team.
although the team is night and day better than last year's version, it's not showing up in the conference W and L columns. That's unfortunate, because you'd want to see a tangible measure of their progress
as for the last play I didn't see it, but usually a key play like that has at least 3 options depending on what the defense gives you. Sounds like the option Curry felt most comfortable with was driving to the basket to score. She probably saw a split second opening and took off, but sometimes those windows close fast
so instead of a score off an opportunity, or a miss with little time remaining for the opponent, Cal ended up with neither
I don't want to use the injury excuse after last year, but although the players are on the court, many of our key players are running hurt including Daniels (back), Jazzy and Crocker (knee?), Cortez (out entire season), Sela (only played a few minutes in a couple games), Bush (out most of Pac12), Alma (not yet 100%)
Next year needs to be our breakout year with Leilani and Evelien as seniors, Cortez and Bush, 3 junior bigs, Sela back with her size, a soph superstar, and a healthier Jazzy and Caitlin
Jayda's shot with so much time left gave me the same feeling I had when Kevin Riley ran against OSU in '07. Utter disbelief. I've got Cal Freshman PTSD.
But the worst part of the night was the PA announcer who filled in for Matt Foley. I know from other sites and talking to other fans that I'm not alone in reviling him.
Bright spot: Dalayah's improvement over the second half of the season which was really evident last night.
DD is playing much better. DD's shot is better technically/mechanically, she must have spent hours changing her form. Michelle is flashing but needs to keep her fouls down. It seems Michelle is starting to "get it". It would be great if she improved A LOT during the off season, her potential is high.

All excellent points, except it's Ortiz not Cortez.

Michelle has height and athleticism but she's a fouling machine. Hopefully something she can be cured of because her potential is great.
