Cal Wide Receivers Coach Kyle Cefalo Expected to Be Next Southern Mississippi Offensive Coordinator
This would be a significant but expected loss for the Golden Bears.
Cal appears to be on the verge of its first significant coaching departure since the switch from Justin Wilcox to Tosh Lupoi. Wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Kyle Cefalo is expected to be hired as the next Southern Mississippi offensive coordinator, reuniting with his former head coach Blake Anderson from Utah State, where he played a similar role. Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports had the initial report.
The Cal pass attack produced 271 yards per game, ranked 25th in the nation. Under his development, Jacob de Jesus was voted an All-ACC First Team selection as an all-purpose player and specialist, grabbing 99 catches for 892 yards and five touchdowns (including the walkoff game-winner at Louisville).
It is rare that a coaching staff stays intact after a change in leadership, so it’s not a surprise to hear stories of coaches beginning to look elsewhere after the season. New Cal offensive coordinator Jordan Somerville will have work to do to fill in the gaps.
Best of luck to Coach Cefalo!
