Curry is the focus of stanford's defense, and stanford coach even instructing her players to deny Curry the ball, but she still scores 3 baskets, including two 'and ones'
Cal hanging with stanford (down 3 midway through Q2)
started off bad with a very questionable fragrant foul on Samb, which turned into a 4-6 point swing. Then tons of turnovers.
Refs have been pretty good, except one ridiculous foul when a player was falling out of bounds with the ball. It's the kinda bad call that a ref might later try to fix with a call the other way, but it never came
This game is over, but shows Cal has improved a ton and capable of 30 point quarters against a top team
Cal scores 74 points vs Stanford, with Curry scoring 30 points despite half the stanford team defending her, and Leilani's 14 on 4-7 shots, including 3-4 from 3. Seven 3s on 47% shooting from the guards was still not enough offense, as Cal's front court only score 19.
But stanford is number 2 for a reason. They shot 56% from the field, including 5 threes from backup guard, and their big ate us up in the post with 20 pts on 8-11 shots. Still it was Stanford star Haley who made it all happen breaking down the Cal defense and drawing all the attention, while also scoring 26 points. 3 players scoring 20+ points is just too much firepower for Cal, and just about every team in the nation
Besides Leilani's great shooting (I've been saying she needs to look for her own shot more, especially when we don't have Jazzy), she was all over the stanford players with her defense, stealing balls, diving on the court (one time she got the ball before the stanford player, yet was called for the foul?), and doing a very convincing Jorge impersonation
a Cal WBB hoops article, and even better than my wildest expectation! Thank you!
I don't have a lot of time to respond right now, but a couple thoughts ... first, I'm thrilled to actually be in Haas watching a basketball game. Yay!
Second, the WBB basketball team actually now has some guards and some non-rookies! How they even were able to stay together as a team and keep fighting last year with a starting five of 2 sophs and 3 freshmen, with two walkon players in the top 7 rotation is quite amazing.
Third, we have a number 30 Curry on our team, and she can handle, drive and SHOOT!
Cal down 10 after Q1. Stanford harassing Curry. Guess every Pac12 team will do the same

Cal tied at the half 42-42
Cal on pace to score 84 points against the number 2 team in the nation, and top defense
42 points at the half already exceeded last year's final score (38)
3rd quarter not kind to Cal

That's a lot of good stuff!
pac12 network showing last years game vs stanford .... final was 83 to 38.
I think Cal does better today
Excellent write-up, thank you. I think AZ is beatable.
Thanks. I'd wager that Cal will upset a ranked team before the season is over.
