Cal WR Trond Grizzell on the two QBs, moving to outside, his new receiver room
The California Golden Bears wide receiver could potentially be the number one option in the fall of 2024.
Trond Grizzell was not known by many Cal fans a year ago, but this season he is going to be staking his claim as a potential starting wide receiver. He chatted about his rise during spring practice, what the new Cal offense looks like, and the two QB battle.
How do you guys balance out how hard you hit and how to be prepared for for contact?
Like some days you just got to be ready for contact. I got to lower my pads there, but I just got to be ready. It's definitely different going from being like in tag off or like touch in practice tempo.
But then going to live is different. Just got to be ready and just ready to transition into it.
On the WR group
Yeah, I definitely feel like we're growing. A lot of new faces in there. A lot of competition, guys transferring in and then freshmen coming in. We'll have another one come in over the summer, freshman. But excited about the group, competitive group Just excited to grow and keep continue growing .
On blocking better
Definitely need to continue to improve on that and have better days out here. Perimeter blocking, just work on it, whether just be just working our technique in our individual drills or actually going out there in team practice and getting it done.
Thoughts going up against the new DB group?
Definitely a lot of talent in the DB group. Some very experienced guys been playing college football for a long time. Yeah, they're all really talented, but it's good because it gets us ready and it gets us a lot of work in practice that we need for come fall, come game time.
Like, obviously you want good DBs that makes you better and then you've got a better defense in the fall.
On offseason program
Yeah, definitely this offseason I've been working a lot. I'm trying to get stronger in the weight room. That's been my main focus. But yeah, definitely just trying to work and then come out here and have a better fall. And I did last fall, so just trying to work and get better.
On playing in games
Maybe like I'll get looked at more by other teams coming into the weeks, but just got to be ready every week. Just got to come out here and perform on practice and get better and then use that in games.
On the versatility of the wide receiver room
I think we got a lot more speed on the inside. Take some shots downfield with, some crossing routes and just let him run and win on the inside
Got another tall guy on the outside, Tobias. And then some other guys. Cole. on the outside as well. J.B. you know, I think we just had a great group, and I'm excited to work on.
On moving back to outside wide receiver and utilizing his length
I think, last year I played in the slot for the entire year. So I'm excited to move back to the outside and work on the outside, but definitely had to grow. Definitely a lot more one on one matchups.
In the slot, a lot of your wins are like zone and understanding where you can find space. On the outside, you get a lot more on-on-one matchups. Obviously, you get zone looks and stuff. But definitely got to win your one on one, but definitely can take advantage of my length on one-on-ones.
On getting balls from Fernando Mendoza vs. Chandler Rogers
Oh it's the same. They both are great quarterbacks. What they're doing, they, both study film a lot. They're, very prepared when they come out on the field. Both amazing guys on and off the field. They both come very prepared. But, yeah, nothing different about how I would run a route or anything.
Will likely see him in the NFL one day. And to think he was a walk on, right? With a name like his, he probably could turn his Cal education to other ventures beyond football too.
I could dig going through life named Trond Grizzell.
