We are in a major athletic conference, and that is obviously a good thing. The ACC is a good academic fit and let's be honest; EVERY athlete in college sports is going to be doing a lot of flying (some more than others, especially on the west coast). We are in a major athletic conference, and that is obviously a good thing. The ACC is a good academic fit and let's be honest; EVERY athlete in college sports is going to be doing a lot of flying (some more than others, especially on the west coast). However, I just read Jon Wilner's interview with Christ that he did early this morning when she received the news that Cal was getting the ACC invite. One portion of it really struck me: "“It’s been probably as intense a period [the negotiations] as I’ve had in my professional life. (It’s) surprising to me, given everything the university does, that it’s about athletics. But I feel very good about the result.” She is SURPRISED by what has transpired over the last year? That athletics plays a role in the life of most universities? Holy Cow, the sobriquet "Clueless Carol" really does apply! To me, this confirms a lot of the rumors about Christ: She puts her heart and soul into the academic side of things and making sure that our prestige/brand in this regard does not falter. Athletics? That's someone else's job. I wouldn't be surprised if she was the college president who was persuaded by an economics professor that the remaining teams in the Pac-10 were worth $50 million each without the L.A. schools. I hope that our next chancellor can manage academics AND athletics. They are not mutually exclusive as so many schools around the nation have proved. But for now, I am happy that we won't be relegated to athletic irrelevance and I've already found the ACC Network in southern California. GO BEARS!!!!!!
Eh, I read that as, "I'm surprised that the most intense negotiation of my career is about athletics, given the breadth of things I also lead and which also have intense negotiations."
Still a read-the-room comment, given her sports obliviousness recently. But not exactly what you're saying.

You are over target. Well said.
The academics and the athletics complement each and make a whole environment, so we're not just a nerd factory.
You are absolutely right. Nerd factory=University of Chicago, aka, "where fun goes to die". I wouldn't want my alma mater to become that.
The list goes on:
Cal Tech
MIT
The small privates.

Rajiv: I copied that word for word. Let's meet in the middle and agree that, if she isn't clueless, then she is certainly tone-deaf.
She's clueless and useless - not prepared for the moment - let's get her on her merry was double pronto
