Here we, as Cal fans, go again. Rationalizing away all of the looming problems with the galling lack of experience in this coaching staff, and hoping for a radically different outcome from what our brains are telling us looks like a disaster in progress.

I'm with you, but I think we've got a chance here for a unique situation.. There's going to be an influx of talent on the field, and all of these coaches are being given a cool opportunity to level up... I think this is going to be fun.

OskiOfTarth's avatar

That's the first leap - that since these guys are so inexperienced and young, they must have awesome recruiting chops. This also is an assumption, as most have little experience in recruiting, and if they were involved, they were down the food chain.

Buckle up! It's going to be a fun ride!

You're forgetting about Ron Rivera's vast experience. He's an invaluable resource and can help coach up the young coaches.

OskiOfTarth's avatar

The head guy having experience doesn't make you experienced. He can provide guidance, sure, but the only way to get experience is to actually do the job. Your average coach will be making a hundred decisions a day w/o Rivera being within earshot.

Rose Bowl Oski's avatar

That's fair, but I have a lot of faith in Ron Rivera's ability to provide salient guidance such that he wouldn't need to be within earshot.

WTF? All that experience for the past decade didn't translate to wins. Football is a young person's game, plus there are enough middle aged guys to provide sage advice when needed in the coaching mix. These young men are smart and have been raised up in winning organizations; they will be fine at doing their jobs, getting us the talent we need, and instilling a winning culture here. Yeah, sure, maybe the whole thing just blows up or something. I doubt it. We are gonna win more than we have for years and it is going to be fun.

Let's see, Jeff Tedford had mo head coaching experience either and as I recall, he did pretty well. I'm looking for talent and creativity (and hard work) and I think Tosh and RR get that.

I'm rooting for the winning, but all supporting evidence points to the explosion.

I guess we will find out how all these changes work out starting September 5th. I wonder how successful we will be when the portal opens.

A lot of first time coordinators hired. Hoping for the best, But. . .

Will this be the youngest coaching staff known to mankind?? Rolo is going to feel like an old fart during staff meetings.

Now let's get rid of So'oto, he hasn't done much at Cal. BTW, there are 2 So'otos on staff, is that his son?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

They better recruit the hell out of the portal because the X’s and O’s are gonna be a work in progress.

I wonder how Dan Lanning is feeling about Tosh poaching all of Oregon’s support talent. This is all going to be a huge success or huge failure. There won’t be much in between.

Thomas Parry's avatar

I talked with a friend from Oregon about this and he said Lanning is supportive because it's tge next level down from coordinators and position coaches.

Daniel Lahl's avatar

That is my read as well, either this approach is brilliant in attracting major new talent, or a bust in coaching/game execution. Let's hope for Jimmys and Joes over X's and O's.

He's always been outwardly supportive. His staff is constantly being raided. Kentucky (Will Stein) is doing some poaching also. Might not be a coincidence that he does things like doubling up coordinator roles.

I get a great feeling about the way Tosh is assembling this team. I believe it is A) built to relate to the modern professional student athlete with B) young strivers determined to make their marks in the coaching ranks. It will create a culture more like Boise State than Oregon; one that self-perpetuates over time as new young bright minds fill in for those who will, with success, be hired away. That includes the HC. It’s a team of rivals/team of friends approach that — relying on youth and vigor rather than big money and marquee coach name status — may well be perfectly timed for this watershed moment in college football history. Time will tell, but fer damn sure Go Bears!

I dunno. I hope you are right. It seems like we might become more cut-throat culture which I hate. I have no factual basis that I can point to so this is just my gut feeling. There is a way to be hyper competitive (which I like) without being cut throat. It takes a true leader to actualize that, and I wonder if Tosh can do it.

Clifford Fewel's avatar

We are in agreement about cut-throat and back-stabbing culture. It seems to me that nine years of Steady Eddy Wilcox Culture won’t just transform into something else overnight, and I choose to believe that Tosh learned something positive from the way he departed the Tedford team. Just a gut, as you say.

Respectfully disagree -- Cignetti transformed IU's culture overnight.

As frustrated as we have all been with 5-7 wins over the past decade, it's still a healthy step above where IU was before Cignetti. I think RR and Tosh may be on the right track with these hires.
