Its not just Knowlton, it's the whole damn athletics department which is choc filled with diversity over competency hires. There is no leadership, just mediocre hacks, all of them. Go to the Calbears website and review the bios of the department senior staff members, mostly non-talents, mostly non-contributors, just office filling dead wood, it's very, very discouraging. As I've often said, Cal's thriving programs (crew, rugby, swimming, water polo) which are headed up by strong coaches and staffs who self-manage and thru self-sufficiency succeed despite the athletics department. Christ is clueless and to blame for the department's demise. When she gets out of the way, can the whole damn rotten lot in the department. Oh, and another thing, none of them are Cal grads, they're outsiders. Off With Their Heads!

My understanding is that there's only one non-White coach at Cal, the Track/CC coach. And the football and basketball coaches are White men, as well ss the athletic director. But diversity is the problem. Got it

You undercut your argument when you overstate/misstate the facts (which are easy to find). Charmin Smith, WBB; Walter Chun, Men's Golf; Jennifer Wong, WLAX; Crissy Jones Schoonderwoerd, WVB; -- in addition to Robyne Johnson, Track/CC (men's and women's) -- plus many assistant coaches. @alpha1906 has a much better take.

You know, you're right. Instead of 1 head coach of color, there are 5. There are 30 sports teams at Cal - 14 men and 16 women. So, 5 out of 30 is 16.7%. Put another way, 83.3% of the head coaches are White. So, diversity is still NOT a problem - which you knew, because that's why you threw in assistant coaches.

Please sit down.

You clearly didn't understand the point of my post, which was you don't advance your argument by shitting on Cal with verifiably false information. Moreover, you're not a great mind reader, as I mentioned assistant coaches to show that there are a bunch of non-white assistants who are gaining valuable experience that might one day lead to a head coach position at Cal or elsewhere. BTW, I was encouraged by the fact that one men's team and the vast majority of women's teams have female head coaches.

I understood your first comment. I messed up in my first post. We both generally agree, and we both love Cal.

Now please stop.

Glad we generally agree, but for future reference, one doesn't elicit goodwill with dismissive admonitions like "Please sit down" and "Now please stop."

Diversity is the problem? Knowlton, Fox, Madsen and Wilcox are as white as wonder bread. Nothing diverse about those hires at all.

I've damned Knowlton and Fox and Wilcox in other posts - I was specifically addressing the senior athletics department set of managers - they are responsible for managing the coaches and addressing athletics department issues and based upon the condition of the department, they have failed - so that means they aren't capable managers, nor leaders, and should be canned - you fail, you hit the road - read the bios - based upon the state of the department, they are an incompetent batch of non-leader managers - maybe if any of them had gone to Cal, they'd give a damn about the state of Cal athletics - Christ as the titular leader, who doesn't know a football from a handball, was out of her element to the point of management embarrassment. It's not that difficult, clear away the cultural and gender side issues and distractions and focus on THE BEST PEOPLE, forget the side agendas. Hire people who are capable, people who know their jobs, people who can do their jobs, and do their jobs damn well. The best, brightest, and most motivated to rescue Cal athletics, nothing else matters.

Only in modern America could someone look at the state of our program and blame “diversity”without sarcasm or irony.

Pretty sure you'd see this in every previous version of America tbf.

I think the real problem is the complacency, inertia, and institutional conservatism that pervades the whole campus. We've always done it this way, it's always been good enough, we'll just keep doing it this way. Most universities are like that to some extent, but Cal seems especially reluctant to shake anything up.

Did I hear that admissions is dropping test scores for consideration?

SMDH

Not adverse to change, just don't let it be success in popular sports.

Please site some examples to support your claim that "diversity over competency hires' have taken place and hurt the athletic department.

Director of Marketing Markeisha Everett is horrid. She has zero understanding of Cal, its history, and the unique challenges of Berkeley. Dreadful hire, and she was on the incompetent task force that foolishly recommended Cal Berkeley.

Completely useless.

So out of curiosity, how does someone effectively market a sh*t sandwich?

You focus on the bread.

Ok I agree with that.

One example from "years and years ago" of a diversity hire and no indication as to whether the person who got the job was competent. I very much doubt that the chancellor was a diversity hire. It's sad that a discussion on the football program is muddled by straw man arguments by disgruntled white males who long to for the days of the patriarchy.

Using a straw man to try to defeat another straw man. LOL.

Curmudgeon who complains about diversity also describes a woman in leadership as "attractive," "nice and sweet"... Entirely unsurprising

That's a pretty stupid argument. Comparing sports, a physical activity, to a job that depends not at all what your physical attributes are and instead on your abilities to manage resources and make and execute on long-term planning.

Among other things, a professor's attractiveness doesn't impact their ability to teach yet you think that's a contributing factor to whether they are good or bad.
