Terrible optics for the program and the conference. Why would any blue chip recruit consider Cal or the Pac 12 with how clear they've made it this season that they don't really care about football? 1 positive test on the whole team gimme a break.
They don't allow positive players to play (Trevor Lawrence), but they also don't make the entire team sit out for contact tracing. Plus they've already have been playing football for weeks.
The only silver lining that I can find out of this news is that at least the University is taking the contact tracing part of the COVID protocol seriously. I have my doubts that that aspect of things was truly followed by other schools (or pro teams) around the country. Hopefully, all the other players under quarantined do not get the disease, and the one(s) that did get it will recover.
Is that wind coming from the north or a giant sigh of relief from the entire state of WA that they don't have to grind through another 4-hour rockfight against us?
Shame it had to happen like this. I hope everyone recovers quickly.
Based on nothing but a hunch, I think the cancellation is likely due to the quarantined players testing positive as well... Hopefully I'm wrong. And hopefully whoever got it recovers fully and quickly.
Yeah. If Player 0 was the only one to test positive, we could have conceivably had everyone else play (assuming those isolating due to contact tracing continued to test negative for at least 48 hours). If even one of the *other* players tested positive, that would likely lead to a quarantine situation that puts us in the situation of having possibly entire position groups unable to play due to required quarantine.
I'm glad they're being cautious instead of just pay lip service like certain southeastern peninsula state schools... but it still sucks to not get to see our sturdy golden bears.
I don't know the exact rules that are in force, but I thought the quarantine period was 14 days from possible exposure. 48 hours of negative tests don't matter, because the incubation period is much longer than that.
Even on day 4 after exposure, the false negative rate for a test is 67%.
I really hope no one else caught it, and that the player that did doesn't suffer lasting damage. I hope the players are properly minimizing their risk for the health and safety of everyone around.
Hi GoBears49. The Rams aren't playing tomorrow, so maybe I will catch a game. I think the Cowboys are seriously hurting for a QB, since I think he's the 4th QB to start for them. Wouldn't have too high of hopes.
dammit Leland all you had to do was not jinx the team. Its ok though not the first time we have been teased and gotten absolutely ended on the other side.
As you can probably tell I'm emotionally charged right now, if it as caught at like a store or restaurant I'm fine that's an innocent place, but if this was caught at a frat party on campus during halloween someone needs to be taught some damn responsibility regardless of their standing within the team.
Hopefully we will be able to play against ASU, depends on how long quarantine goes and whether additional players test positive I guess. They did the right thing.
I don't think the players are that stupid. Why would anyone risk possibly missing a game, or even a whole team shutting down activity or a game? I'm sure the players wanted to play more than any of the fans wanted. And I'm pretty sure the coaches stressed it more than enough.
Well, they ARE 18-22 year olds who like to attend college parties. I REALLY think people their age think they aren't going to get Covid, sort of that they have some immortality-like immunity. When I was young I probably thought the same, but didn't have to face ANYTHING like Covid. I'm bummed......
Right, but I would think, or I should say I hope, that they prefer to play a football game than attend a Halloween party. And I would hope that Wilcox and other coaches really stressed importance of not going to parties if they wanted to play.
Of course they would stress it, but these college kids oughta know better to lose a short term party for a long term season, they could easily attend the Christmas parties at Cal were college girls are dressed like elves.
I've got two kids in "that age range". They're both reasonably with it (one is at Santa Clara, by the way, TD-24....), and at least ONE of them acts like he's not likely to get it. His "bubble" is larger than a bubble should be...... It's just the nature of kids, I think, and I don't mean that as an insult.....
With the amount of evidence I've seen across social media at many colleges, its very feasible for Cal to have had the frats to be acting up, my school Santa Clara is closed but is in the same boat where the frats have been going crazy regardless. I did say they should know better, but all it takes is one person to be lackadaisical and attend since they have friends going and here we are. Again, the restaurant and store possibilities are there but from my view the Halloween frat party seems likely if more cases pop up otherwise I'd rest my case to a store or restaurant if it stays at one case.
This is true J.Bear and BTown, but it does beg the question how come they can't hold themselves down but I can? I mean i'm a freshman in college and while I was damn jealous about the people I was seeing on instagram and snapchat, I learned to keep myself in for the betterment of others aside from a chick fil a redwood city run. If its some backup, it just makes me more mad that they cost everyone due to immaturity, and if it were a starter the responsibility flags must've have already been apparent.
I'll take the credit I just hope everyone else doesn't mess up. COVID is like a group project, you've done your part and you hope everyone else doesn't f it up.
The allure of college girls in skimp outfits on Halloween is very tough for even the most disciplined athletes to resist. Unfortunately it impacted the entire fucking team. I hope its a lesson well learned. And I hope EVERYONE recovers with no long lasting ill effects.
We spoke with Coach Wilcox and broke down the local public health rules that led to the game getting canceled here: https://writeforcalifornia.com/p/why-cal-football-canceled-washington-huskies

Anywhere from "don't test and hope for the best" to "ssssshhhhh keep quiet til Sunday"

Uggh...what more can I say than simply, uggghhhhhh!!!!
That about covers it..... Sads.....

Cuz Cal....

:(
Or enough key players in quarantine. If Chase and a couple Oline starters are at risk, that'd be a tough case......

If I understand this right, it means we won't be playing ASU either.
Sad bear noises 😢

I blame myself for prewriting the gamethread with the line "Cal actually gets to play a game"
I blame you too! : /
I was SO looking forward to this game. So much for the "catching their newbie QB early" idea......
dammit Leland all you had to do was not jinx the team. Its ok though not the first time we have been teased and gotten absolutely ended on the other side.
You're an Old Blue at such a young age...
And I wouldn't have it any other way.....
*hello darkness my old friend*
welp... 😔

At least we get to watch Oregon stomp Stanford. (Unless that gets canceled, too) or the 9am USC-ASU game.
But all our future opponents get game time, and a record
Sad to say it, but we are probably out of the running for the national title 😢😢😢
Well THERE goes my day!!!!! : )
I know damn well it was probably brought in by someone who went to a Cal Halloween party those things go crazy even when not everyone is campus.
I don't think the players are that stupid. Why would anyone risk possibly missing a game, or even a whole team shutting down activity or a game? I'm sure the players wanted to play more than any of the fans wanted. And I'm pretty sure the coaches stressed it more than enough.

I'm guessing you're not the bell part of the curve! Good on you! : )

fuck.
This season should never have been played. I hope the players who caught it recover with no long term issues
That’s what I keep coming back to. As much as I’d love to see a Cal game it’s not worth the risk.
