Counting that upset win over UCLA a little early? A 13-0 Bruin team gets in. A 12-1 UCLA that wins the conference championship game probably does as well. A 12-1 Oregon has a decent chance as well.
No 1 loss P5 Champion has been excluded before. But it always depends on what happens elsewhere. At this point, there could still be 4 other unbeaten P5 Conference champions. Or none with fewer that 2 losses. 8 weeks of football to go.
Charbonet has way more experience. He is bigger and stronger than Ott and is actually a different type of RB. Ott is faster then Charbonet but Charbonet has plenty of speed, and he's a load and not scared of contact.
I go by the film. What the stats don't show are missed blocks by TE's, or 5, 6 and 7 man defensive fronts that bring pressure in overwhelming numbers, a lot of which has to do with down and distance situations. Stats don't show delayed blitzes or outside speed rushers lined up way outside where the OT cannot effectively get to them. Plummer must make these reads.
You can't run into a stacked box and you can't throw a deep ball against an o-line being rushed by superior numbers. Against 4 down and a 6 man box, our o-line has been serviceable. Plummer takes part of the blame as well. The film tells all.
TE's don't count as O-Line blocking, but they do count in overall blocking stats. Against AZ our TE's blocked great. Latu was great against AZ but he was not very good against WASU. Terry was ok against AZ but played better than Latu against WASU. Our bubble screens and receiver blocking was atrocious. Either we just aren't physical enough or we need more experience. Our O-line frequently overruns 2nd level blocks. That's all about understanding plays and getting practice reps, but they need to be full go, physical practice reps; its the only way to really learn. Scheme is part of the offensive plan. A RB coach should not be telling O-Linemen how to scheme blocks just like an O-line coach should not be telling a RB where to line up, mesh and make his reads. (Although the coach who invented the Zone Read play, Alex Gibbs, was the o-line coach for the Denver Broncos at the time and he did work with RB's on the mesh for the read.
When I look at film I see a lot of fundamental issues, mostly little things that add up. When I see the types of problems we are having my first thought is that we are not giving our guys enough QUALITY reps practicing fundamentals. I haven't watched CAL practice but if it were me I would be taking our O-Line back to the basics. I would have them duck walk the chutes everyday before practice. I would have them practice finish drills on the sleds which teaches them to go to the whistle I would have them go through full contact blocking drills on Tuesdays, Wednesdays (and Thursdays if necessary). I'd have them go through full contact LB blocking drills every day. I would work the shit out of their pad levels and ass positions and overall body position on the respective blocks they are supposed to be making. I would work them in full contact pass pro every day and teach them how to 'cheat'. I would run high speed recognition drills every day (these don't need to be full contact but they do need to force recognition for primary and secondary blocking assignments, how to pass off a block, how to chip, how to recognize delayed blitzes and step down and in to stuff them while maintaining a block on the outside guy. There are a ton of little things that we are not doing well and they all add up. Vatikani had a real bad day against WASU, but I would expect that because he's a freshman. In any event, all this stuff can be solved with good teaching, good drills, and good practice reps. But the coach has to be able to make it happen. The last thing I will say is that too often the OC will tell the O-Line coach what he wants to happen on each play. Most O-line coaches just nod their heads and say OK, even if they can't deliver, as they don't want to tell their OC that they can't get it done. My last two years of coaching we went to a spread offense and I told the OC what we we could and could not do based on our talent and abilities. He did not want to hear it at first. After losing our first two games he listened. I made adjustments, the QB had his read responsibilities changed and we lost one more game and then did not lose for the rest of the season. We won our conference championship and a bowl game and my big uglies were the centerpiece of our success and everyone on the team knew it. They were great kids I within their capabilities I got them to play really good, really nasty football until the whistle blew. We owned the box and got really really good at pass pro.
I can't say that's the case at CAL right now, but it seems to me we need to simplify some stuff and force Plummer to make smart plays.
Surprised no one from DBD has popped in to copy and paste some complaints about Musgrave's play calling with an undermanned offense yet. I'm sure some Old Blue somewhere expected Cal to have a bigger lead on BYE by now.
TRESHAUN HARRISON 58 YARDS TO THE HOUSE AND THE BEAVS ARE ON TOP 28-27 with 14 SECS TO GO.
Off the defender's helmet. Pac-12 After Dark delivers again!
Actually, (only) a 56 yard play. But there was even less time left afterwards, just 13 seconds. Still just as exciting.
Everyone laugh at Stanford!
dont mind if I do
We better beat that team.
I'm not laughing too hard. Oregon State is underrated.
But here's three things I love:
1. The Play- light version (i.e. last seconds walk-off play)
2. Most of Furd fans had probably already left to inspect their luxury cars and ready insurance claims for dust and/or fallen branches on their cars
3. The surrender cobras- priceless.
Oregon State wins 28-27. Are you kidding.
OSU will get the ball down 27-22 with 58 seconds and no timeouts
Why am I rooting for Wazzu? Because I want USC to lose.
Then again, Cal could use the $7-8M that comes with a team making the CFP, and SC is the P12’s only chance.
Once they lose tho, I hope the flood gates of losses open!!
Counting that upset win over UCLA a little early? A 13-0 Bruin team gets in. A 12-1 UCLA that wins the conference championship game probably does as well. A 12-1 Oregon has a decent chance as well.
A 1-loss P12 team does not get a CFP bid. Zero chance.
UCLA’s weak non-con keeps them out…Duck thrashing by UGA them as well. Gotta be undefeated for P12 & CFP.
Tho you’re right, I sold UCLA short a little early, tho Chip & DTR always have a dogschitt effort in them somewhere….
No 1 loss P5 Champion has been excluded before. But it always depends on what happens elsewhere. At this point, there could still be 4 other unbeaten P5 Conference champions. Or none with fewer that 2 losses. 8 weeks of football to go.
If that were gonna happen, it would be a PAC 12 school! You know it!!
Yes…teams that earn bids in the CFP bring in $$$ for the conference members…a few years ago I think it was $6M per school.
This is why I’m convinced UGA took a dive v ‘Bama in the SEC Championship game last year…SEC getting two teams each year is so huge.
Yes. The money is equally divided by conference members.
Exactly.
Like the Yankees.
The UCLA attendance is like a Cal game. And two top 20 teams!
Kalifornia college kids no longer seem to care about football.
Agree. I live in a school district that sends 20-30 kids to Cal every year, and they are, for the most part, openly contemptuous of football.
That's notably more emotion about the subject than most have.
That’s a problem
Charbonet has way more experience. He is bigger and stronger than Ott and is actually a different type of RB. Ott is faster then Charbonet but Charbonet has plenty of speed, and he's a load and not scared of contact.
Charbonet is the best RB in the conference. Big and fast.

A lot of the Rose Bowl is tarped off. Maybe 40000 in the stands, probably less.

It was a Wilcox blowout of BYE, 24-13.
Amazing! Bye seems to know all of our plays!
BYE doesn’t wrap up well…Cal’s O-line is once again a leading tackler of the Bears ball carriers…kinda like at Wazzu.…
Hahahahahahahahahah!!
Great way to end a Cal bye week!
Unreal.
What happened to furd? Is Shaw burned out? Seems like they still recruit really well, but they suck.
Like Tedford, he just declined and failed to really adapt the program or hire good coordinators.
His OL has managed to road grade on this final drive and put a big 3 up on the scoreboard.
Cal would’ve gone 3 & out with predictable running plays, punted, and given the ball back to Oregon St with plenty of time left. Turtle time.
Gonna watch Stanford get beat down, which is one of my favorite things.
Dumb pick 6 for DTR
Oregon St had already proven the folly of throwing at Clarke Phillips III. DTR throwback moment on an otherwise masterful afternoon.
I am not even sure why UCLA was even throwing on that down.
Looks like USC and UCLA are the top 2 teams in the conference.
I still don't believe in USC. I think they're a bunch of smoke and mirrors on defense.
I think their offense is strong enough to make up for any deficiencies on defense.
There’s not a ton of teams with an O good enough to keep pace.
Mirrors that are the best in the country at takeaways.
Chip Kelly looks like a pink lizard
He is pink.
If I was a Stanford player, I'd start a fight. Just because.
Conference of Cannibalism…
Usually is, though the Cougs would disagree in the aftermath of a couple of their games against ranked opponents lately.
Sure, tho that’s a program that has made a new class of gaggin’ it!!! Cougin’ it!!
