You’re off base on who becomes a lifelong diehard. In my years at Cal we had no winning seasons, and many of my classmates similarly, in spite of that, for years have gone to games week in, week out at our peril. Can’t explain it. However, let’s think about who are often the most unpredictable age group of fans: teens and young adults who might have other parties to go to. However, these are also the ones who it seems don’t mind the 7:30 starts and, more than old blues, have shown up for some of these late tilts. I think, going back about fifteen years, as game times trended later and canned music became the soundscape du jour, your otherwise season ticket holders finally threw in the towel as regular attenders. What you’re left with are fickle young people as your core group of fans. Not blaming them, as Saturdays are for partying. However when the older crowd has felt ignored, maybe a big part of your fan and donor base, who’s bedtimes don’t stretch to well after midnight, stays home/recoils to its living rooms after the tailgates.
I wish Joe Starkey had been calling the game. I would have listened to the second half.
