I think there was pretty lackluster reaction to the live threads on CGB this season - a lot of the discourse is on twitter. I think the team will be evaluating what threads will go on as we go forward - a lot of this is adjustment.

I can definitely see that argument. Basketball threads in particular have been moribund but even football threads saw decreased participation.

But on the other hand, I don't like Twitter and I don't want an account.

Football live threads are not going away. I think there will be a lot of discussion (and suggestions welcome!) about how to handle basketball next season. WFC is definitely an evolving product.

Expand full comment

I quite enjoyed Amazing Mrs. Maisel, it's a lot of fun, and the acting is quite good, but some of the characters are way too broad to be taken seriously (it is mainly a comedy with serious bits)

Haven't seen Sex Ed.

Expand full comment
GlueAndBold's avatar

Am I missing something or is it not called Marvelous Mrs. Maisel everywhere?

Anyways, the character development is quite good but the dialogue often leans too hard into a staged whirlwind of wit. It's fun the first few times but feels overused later on. Season 4 also had too many airy musical performances that just kind of took up space.

Expand full comment
Cugel's avatar

It is Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. To me it has an feeling of artifice, which is not bad, per se, (I'm a big Wes Anderson fan) but I know what you mean about a "staged whirlwind of wit" - but I just roll with it.

It's clearly the intentional, established style of the show. You like it or you don't, but it's not a mistake.

I could see criticism of the characters always landing on their feet, even in divorce, the Maisel's are happy and get along. So there doesn't ever seem to be lasting consequences or true affliction. I agree it is a comedy with serious bits. It is a heady comedy though, which I guess is my favorite kinds. I also really liked HBO's Bored to Death.

Sex Ed is also comedy with serious bits. Lots of likeable characters and hilarious situations and good character development. I highly recommend it.

People always feel raw when their candidate drops out of the primary and say such things, but not that many actually withhold their vote.

I would think if Bernie threw his support for Biden his supporters would vote for Biden.

That didn't work so well in '16, but I guess how he ends his campaign will have a lot to do with that.

Yeah he needs to bow out much earlier. Biden is already appealing to Bernie voters. Be classy, Bern! Separately, I think we tend to overemphasize small groups of loudmouths on social media. I hope that is all the ppl vowing not to vote Biden are. It’s such a stupid position to take...

This is definitely the wrong take home message, but I find it kind of refreshing that for once, it's a man who's being told to be classy and bow out gracefully, and who's being characterized as "difficult to work with."

Of course, it's a man because all of the women have had to bow out.

You know, I'm more concerned he takes a positive message the rest of the way, not that he drops out soon so much. No attacking Biden, and no attacking the DNC, no "rigged" nonsense.

zero chance of that happening. it's going to be several months of whining about the evil DNC, and 'rigged' primaries.

They just closed their (pretty successful) Shanghai branch for good. The restaurant business is hard - they were filled and busy for 18 straight months - three bad months and I'll never get to order a juicy lucy on yuyuan road again.
